So I have build for an Eldritch Knight character using a standard array setup and have taken human variant as my race. My racial feat is Heavy Armour master for the str, and damage reduction for fun/flavor. I have taken the Noble background and have been given a standard horse as part of my noble heritage (kept in style and the other benefit don’t help much in this campaign).
stats are
str 17 dex 8 con 14
int 13 wis 12 Cha 10
skills I’ve taken are: persuasion, history, animal handling , arcana , and perception.
I have chainmail armor, an explorers pack. 37 starting gold due to background random roles. A lance for the horse, a shield, longsword, and some javelins.
In addition I’ve taken defensive as my fighting style.
My Dm has ruled that EK needs a boost in order to be viable with other fighter archetype so has allowed me to learn spells from not only abjuration, and evocation but also transmutation as many flavor well as “ability” modifying spells such as jump, featherfall , magic weapon, spider climb, etc.
With that in mind - what do you guys suggest I take for spells with this new school of magic open to me in addition to the schools already given? Any synergy/suggestions to my setup in general such as feats or fixes are welcome and appreciated.
With an Intelligence of 13 you will want to stick to buff spells rather than offensive spells, as such your spells will be drawn almost exclusively from the Abjuration and Transmutation schools. Does your version of the Eldritch Knight still get the option to pick from any school at the appropriate levels?
1st level spells are likely to include Shield, Absorb Elements, Longstrider or Expeditious Retreat, Feather Fall. Include Magic Missile if you want at least 1 offensive spell. Open spell suggestion: Find Familiar.
2nd level becomes easier for low Int EKs since there are few 2nd level Abjurations (Arcane Lock) but lots of Transmutations: Alter Self, Magic Weapon, Enlarge/Reduce, Levitate, Spider Climb. Open spell suggestion: Blur or Mirror Image or Misty Step.
3rd level starts with Haste and Fly before considering Dispel Magic, Counterspell and Blink. Open spell suggestion: Thunder Step.

Those are some good points and suggestions. I am unsure what you mean though by pick from any school at appropriate lv? Where does it say this?

Perpetually annoyed that Eldritch Knights can't use Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Smite, and Eldritch Sight.
