I'm completely new to 5th edition. Last time I played was back in the late 90s with 2.5 AD&D. I played a weapons master that I played from 1st level through 19th. And I just recently got back into TRP and would like to play another weapon master. The closest I found to a build I knew was on this site. Can anyone give any suggestions?
The fighter class has access to all simple and martial weapons at first level, and more (exotic weapons) are available through feats. Battle master sub class uses manoeuvres for added versatility in combat. I'm not familiar with weapons master from 2.5 but this sounds like the closest thing you'll get.
The class you've linked to is homebrew. For official options I'd recommend either the Battle Master Fighter or the Kensei Monk. The former has various abilities for controlling or inflicting conditions on enemies and buffing your allies. The latter combines the Monks martial arts, mobility and ki abilities with features that improve your weapon attacks. The Samurai Fighter might also be of interest to you: its signature feature gives you some temporary HP and advantage on all attacks for the rest of the turn.
Ah the weaponmaster a 3rd ed class that never saw a reprint in anything 3.5. You sir are a connoisseur.
The weaponmaster was a crit killing multiattack machine. The problems you face trying to replicate this are:
No weapons have high crit ratings now. Its all 20 or bust
Attacks per round are built in class features and no more whirlwind feat means no more red steel whirlwhind.
There are no more multiple attacks of opportunity so no more bizarre multi whirlwinds
So what can you do to get the meaty broth flavour of the old weaponmaster?
Champion gives you the only route to improved crit (reliably) these days and its a fighter subclass. So that works out.
Fighter grants more attacks at 5th (but other classes do as well) and fighter is the only class that gets more than two attacks at higher levels (with one action)
Some feats still exist - Sentinel will allow you the potential for one more attack per round if you partner up with a friend in melee, great weapon master will allow you to trade accuracy for damage (like the old power attack option)
Thats about it as far as I can think off the top of my head, the rest is about how you play the character and how you emphasise their innate knowledge of fighting arts. Keep in mind there are no exotic weapon proficiency feats anymore and no spike chains or other ahem special weapons of mayhem.
I hope you can find something that strikes your imagination and sparks your enjoyment playing, have fun Wicked!
