Hmmm... I'm suggesting if I can create a Forest Gnome with Inteligence and Dexterity as his/her prior Ability scores. Then, with the Far Traveler background, go with the Animal Handling + Acrobatics ( Fighter class proficiencies )............... and the best part :
Get a pet pig as your Riding animal.
Equipped with a Lance, and a Bow ( no shields here ) and wearing Light armor.............. is it enough worthed ????
If it is worthed, then at lvl 5 or 6, get some wizz lvls. Anyone ever created 1 char of those ???

It does seem fun. The only problem gets to be mounts usually die. You can get them barding (armor) and take the mounted combat feat to help, but still they die. The big problem is Mounts don’t get more hit points as you level up, so you face tougher enemies, but the mount is no tougher. mounts usually drop the first time they get caught in a fireball. Also, they don’t get death saves when they go to 0, and the cleric usually doesn’t want to spend a spell slot to heal them. Mounts seem cool, and can work at low levels, but by level 5 or 6, they don’t last long.
The problem with the Giants there is I cannot enter the caverns or dungies with them, or else I gonna be stuck so soon. That's why I wanted to choose an animal enough big to be rided, and also enough small to go in further in those dungies....
The other problem is..... there's only a 15% chance spotting ( or less ) a Giant badger on every Campaign I play.
I have a gnome cavalier that is a constant thorn in my DM's side. I ride a black bear (medium mount) and use a lance. There are homebrew documents out there to level mounts/animals if needed. That's the best way to keep it alive.

Giant badger is medium sized. And, who cares, it is magic after all. So ask DM to get it.
