Let's say your DM wants to run a level 1-5 campaign and you want to play a monk. Meaning you'll only get the benefits of the first, level 3, benefits of your monk subclass. Many of the subclasses for the monk are typically ranked by players based on overall benefits, which is to say you assume you play past level 17. But let's ignore that for a minute. You're only getting the first benefits of the class before the campaign ends. Which do you pick? Why?
If only going to level 5 Ascendant dragon just to get level 3 ability to get pass magic resistance Any campaign over level 5 mercy, shadow, or open hand
