Do you need an unused bonus action to be able to use the focus point for two unarmed attacks or does using the focus point grant an extra bonus attack?
I don't think I'm understanding it correctly but I know some classes can use points to cast extra spells and stuff.
So, I'm not sure if that means that at level 2 monk, you can now do an unarmed attack action and an unarmed bonus attack and then spend a focus point to do two more unarmed, or if the focus point lets you do one additional on top of the bonus action already used.

You need to use your bonus action to do Flurry of Blows. Spending the focus point on it does not grant you an additional bonus action. It lets you make two unarmed strikes with your bonus action, instead of just one. You still just have one bonus action per turn.
So, as a level 2 Monk, you could get a maximum of three attacks per turn: use your Attack action to make one, and then use Flurry of Blows (spending one focus point) to use your bonus action to make two more.
Hi, on your turn, you can do this actions: 1 Action (attack, hide, dash, magic action, etc) 1 Bonus Action (this is always described as a bonus action, different than the normal action). 1 Move 1 Reaction (can be taken at anyone else's turn, but you only get 1 reaction per round, refreshed at the start of your next turn, or something like that).
So the bonus unarmed strike and the flurry of blows, both use a single Bonus Action frame to execute, you can't use both at the same time. Either you spent the focus point to do flurry of blows, or do the single bonus action attack (or any other bonus action the monk gets, with or without the expenditure of a focus point).

Your basic attack is an Attack action and unarmed strike. At level 2 you gain 1 Focus Point and you can spend that FP to now do two unarmed attacks, in addition to the Attack action. The more FP you earn as you level up, the more times you keep making those two unarmed strikes. When you run out, you just go back to doing on unarmed strike and one Attack action.

Or some other kind of bonus action besides the unarmed strike (that you always have). Without needing to spend fp that you don’t have at early levels

A monk can make one unarmed attack as a bonus action (without needing to make an attack with the attack action first)
A monk can spend 1 Focus Point to improve this bonus action unarmed attack by allowing 2 Unarmed Strikes.
Like how a monk has Patient Defense, and Step of the wind. Both take a bonus action but with a Free Version and a 1 Focus Point Version of the ability. Just think of Flurry of Blows as a 1 Focus Point improvement to the bonus action unarmed attack.
