I've rolled up a warforged monk for the Eberron camping we've been running, and I've been asked how Beyond calculated my AC.
Beyond says that my guy's AC is, 10 + my Dex bonus (4) + "unarmored bonus (integrated protection)" (5), for a total of 19.
However, a monk's Unarmored Defense says that AC should be 10 + Dex (4) + Wis (2) for a total of 16.
If I go with the warforged Darkwood Core for integrated protection (unarmored so as to get access to monk class features), it would be 11 + Dex (4) for a total of 15, since monks don't have armor proficiency and I haven't taken a feat.
So my question is, how is Beyond getting 19 for my AC?
You do have light armor proficiency! Apparently you took the Lightly Armored feat and gained proficiency in the light armor(and forgot to pick whether you wanted a STR or DEX bump from it, so make sure you get the most out of that!).
As a general rule of thumb, you can't benefit from 2 types of base AC such as the Darkwood Core and Monk's Unarmored Defense, so you pick one or the other to use. Dndbeyond is usually pretty good at picking up on which one is the better to use, and noticed you would get the higher AC from Darkwood Core since it has the prof bump, so you can absolutely ignore your Monk AC mechanic until/unless it surpasses the bonus you get from Darkwood Core.
Same would happen during a typical multiclass with barbarian, as you'd have both Barb's and Monk's unarmored defense and get to pick which of the 2 would benefit you most.
Thank you to everyone who posted on the 8th. I should apologize; I was messing around with future upgrades and had changed out one of my feats for Lightly Armoured, just to see if the automatic AC calculation would change (it didn't, so still broken) and forgot to change it back.

Just noting that this doesn't work and you can't have unarmored defense class feature from both Monk & Barbarian. It's a peculiarity of the multiclass rules:
Oh thank you, that's interesting! For some reason I thought mechanics would distinguish between the different kinds and would act differently from the inability to gain extra attack from 2 sources. It's good to know that it doesn't, and counts them as the same feature.
Yeah, sure enough. I replicated the issue making a fresh warforged monk with the same stats. Some check must just be missing in the code, so it always assumes you have light armor proficiency with the Darkwood Core instead of actually confirming whether or not that's true. Interesting. The good news is at least, that it's still smart enough to tell which armor bonus benefits you most. I tried bumping dex and wisdom into the 20's and the unarmored defense does become the priority AC calculation when it's the better one, so that at least is working as intended.
In the mean time, you can always go back to edit your character and deselect your Darkwood Core so that the option isn't active to warrant your current AC override.
If it is a replicatable bug make sure to bug report it.
I thought I was by posting it here :)
Is there a bug report forum or form I can fill in? I tried looking but admit that I was looking for more of an explanation and confirmation that I wasn't getting things wrong...

Where is this in the book? Not that it's really a big deal, because it doesn't stack anyway, but most people have understood that you pick which one you benefit from, not that you can't have it twice. It's a minor point, but the site might be wrong.

It's in the multiclass section of the player's handbook under class features.

TIA.
Can you share a link to your character, so I can see it
Sure, thanks for taking a look.

Yeah, it seems to be improperly adding your proficiency even though you don't have light armor proficiency. Looks like a bug.
Thanks. I'll report it as a bug. Much appreciated!
Actually, you have 19 ax because warforged allows you to add your proficiency to your ax for your nay armor.
So your ac is 11+4 dex+4 proficiency = 19

Your character has light armor prof.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.

I appreciate the feedback and insight, though!

Check the warforged itself. I think it gives you auto light armor proficiency because it doesnt have a no armored form.

There is a bug report forum yes ;)
D'ohh. How did I miss that...
Thanks!
