Hey guys, my Paladin is kind of... different and I'm having a difficult time making her on here. She's a mountain dwarf who was cast out from her family because she was theorized to be illegitimate and her father passed away so there was little reason for her family to "put up" with her anymore. She got caught in a blizzard while trying to descend the mountain and took shelter in an abandoned temple, only to be chosen as a vessel for the goddess Auril, something that she couldn't be less pleased with. In order to avoid just being at the mercy of her new Goddess, she takes the Oath of the Seeker, hoping that by seeking out a holy symbol (which she doesn't have), she'll be able to gain enough control to eventually rid herself of her Goddess.
However, in addition to having a difficult time filling in information about my character's background (inheritor) and her info in general, I can't find a good Oath for her, or even something to "make do" for now. The only Oath available to me is the Oath of Devotion (which could not be further from what my character needs) and I can't find Oath of the Seeker in the marketplace, or any Oaths similar.
I've checked out Oath of Redemption, but she's not trying to redeem herself, necessarily. She's just trying to get her Goddess off her back. Oath of Vengeance wouldn't work either because she's not trying to get back at someone or right a wrong. She just wants to be left alone. She didn't want to be thrust into her new situation. Hell, she'd just been abandoned and cast out by her family after the death of her father. The last thing she needed was to be confronted with a Goddess and as a dwarf, magic is the last thing she'd associate with a good time.
Oath of the Seeker isn't an official subclass. Also note that Oath of Redemption isn't about redeeming oneself, it's about believing others can be redeemed.
Paladins draw power from their convictions; it sounds like paladin might not be the right class for your character based on their story and how you've described them. Being chosen - willingly or otherwise - to serve a deity is what clerics are all about. Divine Soul Sorcerer is another option.
Alternatively you could play a paladin purely for the mechanics but roleplay your character as another class.
I do plan on changing or adding a another class at some point because I agree that she doesn't really belong with the paladin class. That disconnect between her and her class is part of her character arch. She has all of these expectations thrust upon her that she doesn't have all of the information or time to really be able to decide if she really wants it or not. She also doesn't have control of her magic in any reasonable sense, partly because she's resistant to it and partly because Auril wants control. Her skills really resided with being something of a fighter or warrior, but when chosen, she gained the magic and holy influence of a "paladin." I'm sorry if not all of that makes sense. I'm new-ish to D&D, had a really new GM when I made her, and I really wanted to have a character with the aesthetic I liked, but nothing like any character I would have normally played.
As far as my misunderstanding about the Oath of Redemption, it still doesn't fit anyway, but I'm glad that you clarified for me. Thank you. I suppose her greatest conviction would be that good things will only come to those who actively search for them-- nothing good comes to those who wait. Her whole quest being to find a holy symbol and/or the information and resources necessary to be rid of her goddess fits into that since she could easily just sit around and be a vessel and hate everything, but she is willing to put forth the effort and energy to make her desire come true, even if a literal goddess is working to keep her from doing so.
Oath of the Seeker being unofficial was news to me, but then again, I didn't really look for the actual book/guide that it came from. I just pulled it off of a D&D 5e website and called it good. Other than just using that Oath anyway and ignoring what the character builder has to say about it, are there any other Oaths that come to mind when I describe her conviction? I really appreciate your help. It's been hard finding anyone more experienced who doesn't either take over or just say "well, she's your character so do what you want" and leave it at that.
Maybe you could tweak Oath of Conquest, also it occurs to me that the Oath doesn't come into play until third level so if you multiclass before you have much more thematic leeway.

Perpetually annoyed that Eldritch Knights can't use Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Smite, and Eldritch Sight.
You can also now re-build the Oath of the Seeker within the Homebrew Subclasses system. That would allow you to "code" it in and have it available in your character builder, even if you bought nothing from the marketplace.
The process is simple enough, and to help out further (should you need) you can also build it starting from an already existing Oath, so to already have the features that normally go with an Oath as template to change to your needs.
Not sure you could publish it for everyone to use, as that depends on the expanded spell list and other possible copyright issues, but nothing stops you from using it privately.

Any ideas?
