I want to play a Chaotic Good Paladin of the Crown, but I am trying to figure out a way to make this actually possible.
To make a character who is truthful and honest, as made by the Oath of the Crown, but Chaotic for freedom. The best way I have come up with this, is that in combat the character protects everyone in the party with their life, and gladly falls if it means the other survive. However in role playing he will be willing to steal if it was for the greater good, and threaten people if needed.
Do you think that this is the right path to go, or just play Lawful Good instead?
(I really want to play a Defender/Tank character in combat)
Chaotic just means he is more free spirited and not constrained by rules/systems/structure. Chaotic good I don't think would steal as that's not "good" but if someone said in order to eat you must perform this specific task he might find other ways around doing that tax as he wouldn't be constrained by the rules set forth. His thinking on who to protect in combat might be a little less...traditional as well, not that he'd be stupid but he might have different justification on why he's prioritizing who he protects first.
That's just my take on it of course and the subject of alignment is MUCH debated but I always look at chaotic as a bit of a rebel, non conformist, spontaneous type, I do what I want sort of thing and the evil/neutral/good portion defines how you act out from there.

To me It sounds as if you like the game mechanics of the Oath of the Crown paladin. If you want to play a character that leans towards chaotic good, my suggestion would be to use the Oath of the Crown but re-flavor it to suit your purposes. Here is an example for you:
Oath of the Guardian
TENETS OF THE GUARDIAN
Paladins of this oath swear to be the first line of defense in the fight against evil and corruption.
Conviction. Hold firm to your beliefs. Don't let outside influence cause you to stray from the righteous path.
Freedom. Protect the less fortunate and fight against tyranny and oppression.
Inspire. Be a guiding light that shows others how to act and effect change in a positive manner.
Resolve. Fight despair and protect others with your last breath, if you must.
Wow! That sounds amazing, I didn’t think of changing the oath. I really like this! I will bring this up to my DM and see what she thinks. Thank you again, you are awesome!
You can just talk to your DM to throw the "oath" part out of the window and play a chosen of gods person. As in for some reason a certain loves you despite your flaws and decided to bestow their power upon your character. or the god sees something in your character that could be used to do good or achieve certain goal.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Well, it says that Crown Paladins protect Law and Civilization, but maybe your Paladin could defend the walls of civilization, making sure that nothing enters to destroy the Law. In this case your character is Chaotic because he is outside the Law, but still a protector of it.
