Fallen Aasimar Oathbreaker Paladin - First session is on Sunday. I am pumped.
This is a fantastic combo - narratively, aesthetically, & mechanically. I've played more than one myself. For a great default character portrait, look for the official art for the 3.5 'Helbred' race from the book 'Fiendish Codex II'.
It also comes with a decent built in excuse for being a Fallen Aasimar without being outright evil, as the darker disposition and cruel and callous methods of the conquest paladin, something a mortal aasimar might come to feel are justified by the cruel and corrupt state of the mortal world around them, could easily earn the disapproval and rejection of a celestial patron residing in a less ethically compromising divine realm.
EDIT: whoops, you said oathbreaker, not conquest. Eh, a great combo either way.
That must have been awesome just started dnd and that’s what I want to play 😂 I love the character building aspect in terms of backstories, and how you change throughout your campaign amazing game.
Aasimars are the ideal race I play for both my Paladins I have. I tend to play scourge a lot for the thematics of it. I've also played protector and its fun ive done a lot of shenanigans with it.
We're running Out of the Abyss while some players will be in and out of town for our main campaign. In that campaign, I play a human GS ranger/rogue who was found on a couple of corpses by deep gnomes who adopted and raised me. The timeline takes place right after OotA. I worked with my DM to create a concept of a Scourge Aasimar Paladin who winds up being my real father (kinda like Zeus being my daddy). My plan is to run him with a haunted one background where he eventually succumbs to the fiend at the end of the campaign and turns into a Fallen Aasimar Oathbreaker Paladin/warlock who gives his child to his wife and a bodyguard and tells them to escape before he turns or something like that. Gonna be fun to watch the others' reaction in the main campaign.
I'm starting a campaign as a fallen aasimar blood hunter. Turned to blood magic after the lose of his love to try to bring her back. The race doesn't quite mesh with the class as well as some, but the role playing is very interesting. There is also another aasimar paladin in our party that is trying to show me the way. It's very fun.
only yesterday i made a fallen Aasimar warlock with the genie patron, after been abandoned by his angelic guide he turned to the genie for help. should be a fun role-playing experience
Aasimars are my go to when building Paladins. To who ever thinks that Aasimars arent the best race hands down for Paladins well you need to learn how to build the class.
Thematically there is a ton of opportunity and it's something I have been playing with a lot in my current Curse of Strahd campaign I'm in.
Uriel a Protector Aasimar Paladin of Lathander. His oath was to rid the lands of darkness and deliver light to this in need. As things progressed while creating his back story his Deva, Horus-Re, whom works under Lathander and goes by the Master of Vengeance and Lord of the Sun. Perfect for a Protector Aasimar and Vengeance Paladin who is trying to rid the lands of Barovia of darkness.
With all of that going on it has allowed some pretty incredible RP moments within Barovia including him going super saiyan and flying a recent murdered child to the local Temple of the Morning Lord in front of the town folks.
Aasimars are at their best when they're Paladin that dips into other spellcasting classes that use charisma, but not multiclassing with them isn't ideal, because they don't get a bonus to strength, which is not great considering a paladin is mostly a melee class. I would just use a half elf or a UA draconic bloodline race.
You dont need a higher str than 15 to be effective as a Paladin. Further I have a Devotion Paladin/War Cleric and a Devotion Paladin/Zealot Barbarian that would both beg to differ with your statement. Both are built with point buy and both are Scourge Aasimars.
The aasimar synergize really well with paladins (and clerics). It is hard to not pick them because they fit so well mechanically and thematically. Also for in person games if you use minis you can pick any human with plate and they work perfectly for using on a terrain board or dungeon. I am trying to branch out more and pick something less optimal but fun flavor wise and not a complete hindrance.
Interestingly, the Aasimar is the only character race in MotM which still has a racial spell-casting ability that is fixed to one ability score (Charisma). Not sure if that’s an oversight (the spell in question is Light, so I doubt the choice of ability will often matter), but does suggest WotC still envisage Aasimars as natural Paladins.

The only time I would play a fallen aasimar paladin is if I was a oath of conquest.
