Ok, Everyone! What is the most damage you can do with a level 1 paladin who is proficient in firearms, wields a pistol, and has a strength score of 10, dex of 16, con of 14, intelligence of 8, wisdom of 12, and charisma of 16! Only basic rules! Give me an actual number! The highest damage in 5 days wins! Winner get's a prize! Note: Winner doesn't really get a prize
X multiplied by X, where X is the amount of smoke powder kegs in close proximity to victims in a smokepowder factory you just ignited with your shot, BOOM everybody dies including you.
Edit: I thought he meant any firearm, so I went with Antimatter rifle lol.
New proposal! +3 Pistol deals 1d10 damage, x2 on a crit, +6 from being a +3 and from dex 16. 26 Damage.
Edit: Even more damage!!! The bullets are coated in Purple Worm poison, so if they fail the save and the attack is a crit, 24d6 more damage. Total with the above is: 170 damage.

I would love to say that poisoning a bullet wouldnt work as the heat, friction along the barrel to name a few reasons wouldnt make poisoning applicable to bullets but a recent module had poisoned bullets in it so.. yeah thats possible?
If your DM allows it, you could grapple someone and just put the pistol to their head, but I think you probably against all monsters. In addition, if you grappled them, the PHB says you would have disadvantage from 5 ft away... but your DM would probably say its no disadvantage.
Even if you grappled, even if you were allowed to put a gun to sleeping persons head you still have to roll to hit them and they still get dexterity to armour class by rules. I guess its to avoid the coup de grace of previous editions (mostly being used on players, not by players) If the DM allows instant kill shots then great, but sleep spell will mean an apprentice mage will likely kill at least one member of your party with one ally waiting to kill a sleeping target.

Don't forget to be a Variant Human (Magic Initiate: Warlock) so you can have cast Hex beforehand, giving you 2d6 necrotic on that crit. 182 damage!

Even better, the Martial Adept feat adds superiority dice, which are d8s instead of d6s for hex. 2d8 more damage for a crit. 186 damage!

Martial Adept actually adds d6 superiority dice. But don't fear! A pistol is a one-handed weapon, so Crossbow Expert lets us use our bonus action to attack with a +3 hand crossbow (also coated in Purple Worm Poison, of course). 170+162=332 damage!

Sooo The pistol shot into a smoke powder barrel in a powder factory is still looking at a potential of hundreds of thousands of damage but lets try this.
Dex 16, +3, pistol+3 1d10+6
sharpshooter proficiency +10 damage (sure you could go martial superiority for a d6)
hex from ring of spell storing +1d6
(if poison is possible) purple worm venom 12d6, con for half
grave priest channel divinity curse from ally - on targets next hit received they are vulnerable to all damage
diviner 2nd level portent with a saved 20, so its a crit and a 2 to make that poison save fail
1d10+16+1d6+12d6 - now most damage? if you rolled maximum on everything? 88+16* / or mart adept 1d10+6+1d6 hex+1d6 MartAdept+12d6 = 94+6
The crit makes that 176+16, the target is vulnerable and that means the 192 damage becomes 384 / or mart adept = 188+6 + vulnerable = 388
Alternatively ring of spell storing conjure volley hitting everything in 40' radius and every 5' space has 4 tiny targets (2.5x2.5) deadly humming birds, no doubt, which were animal shaped creatures. thats 164 spaces (very roughly), x 4 tiny size for 656 x 8d8 (max damage unlikely but sure lets go with it) 64 makes it - roughly 41984 damage, causing the hummingbirds to return to the original form and fall 200 feet for another 20d6 (hitting in the worst way possible for maximum damage?) 120 more x 656 so another 66912? for a total of 108896. Interestingly if the paladins other hand held an alchemists fire flask and he dropped his pistol to cast conjure volley the 656 could all be hit by a volley of alchemists fire and also be burning on the way down for 1d4 each, probably unable to put it out due to a case of terminal death and that would deal at least 656 d4 more, once at least for a new total of 111,520
Still less than an explosion in a smoke powder factory.

Instead of shooting his gun, my paladin throws the enemy over the side of an extradimensional well with a breakable barrier every 200 feet. The thrown enemy falls, hits a barrier, falls, hits a barrier, falls, etc.
How much damage? 20d6*the amount of barriers, for a potential infinity damage! :)

Ummm...
You could feed the enemy to a Tarrasque. Repeat, and you have a pet Tarrasque. He does more damage per round than some weak poison and hex and all that stuff.

OP says that the Paladin wields a pistol. OP said nothing about what else the Paladin wields.
And that's all I have to say about that.
(thank you. I was waiting to see who else noticed that.)

No.. That requires 2 hands. Must have a pistol in 1 hand.
