Ranger is the only class I ever multiclass with because they do not seem to stand on their own very well. They are also the only class with a dead level where nothing worthwhile gets added. Level 6 to be exact. Things might be different if any of the campaigns I played allowed UA ranger.
On the Revised Ranger PDF, it states that, in the event you are using a subclass that isn’t from the revised sheet then at level 5 you get extra attack as a conclave feature.

Revised Ranger is not a thing in Xanathar. It did not make it to official material.

The last Ranger I played was a Beast Master, but I worked with my DM to put together a better version of the Ranger, but keeping its pre-existing flavour and feel:
Favoured Enemy: The main change from the PHB version was an inclusion of the Revised Ranger damage table and the ability to change your selection during a Long Rest. This does not change your language option, only what types of beings are affected by your Favoured Enemy.
Natural Explorer: Again, I was allowed to change this option to any other type over a Long Rest, and it also gave me a climbing and swimming speed equal to my walking speed.
Primeval Awareness: Still required a spell slot, but was far more effective for the relatively high cost: it now worked on any type of creature, and revealed location, number and type.
Land's Stride: This also gave me an extra 10ft of movement speed and I could Dash or Disengage as a bonus action.
Feral Senses: I could also no longer be surprised
Foe Slayer: We did play to level 20, and when we got there this got a massive overhaul. I was now able to:
Retain that damage bonus, but doubled
Use Primeval Awareness for free (unlimited time)
Cast all spells nonverbally
Go twice as long in harsh environments, or without food, water or sleep etc. without suffering exhaustion
Ranger's Companion: Here's where the big changes come in:
Use this table to determine Companion level: 3rd - 1/4 (Medium) 6th - 1/2 (Medium) 9th - 1(Medium) 12th - 2 (Large)
Your companion shares your initiative and takes its turn on yours.
You can command it to move for free, and command it to take any action as a bonus action (both verbally).
The companion automatically attacks the same creature as you unless directed otherwise (it follows that instruction to completion, then returns to you)
The companion never requires your command to use its reaction, but you as the player control what it does.
If you are incapacitated or absent, the beast acts on its own focusing on protecting you and itself.
If it dies, you can bond to a new one over 8 hours or resurrect your old one in 4.
The companion gains Hit Dice and HP as you do, using its own Hit Die
You add your proficiency to its AC, HP, saves, attacks, skills and damage.
For any purpose that requires a level, the companion assumes your level.
Your companion gains the benefits of your Land's Stride, Vanish and Feral Sense features at the appropriate levels, and you can spend an extra minute to camouflage your companion when using Hide in Plain Sight.
Exceptional Training: Attacks count as magical for overcoming immunity, if you attack the same creature it is attacking then it can use its reaction to attack it as well, it gains adv. on all saves.
Share Spells: When within 60ft of each other, the companion can choose to gain any spell effects applied to you, and you can choose to gain any spell effects applied to it.
Beast Master Spell List: Yes, we made one, and this is how it goes: 3rd - Feather Fall, 5th - Enhance Ability, 9th - Fly, 13th - Dominate Beast, 17th - Insect Plague
We found that these various tweaks and changes made the character a lot more fun to play, and a lot more viable in terms of power and damage. Perhaps I was playing conservatively, but I was never outdoing any of my party members in their respective fields. I never did excessively more damage than the fighter or the barb, I never out-stealthed the Rogue unless camouflaged and I never out-healed the cleric. I played very much as a tracker and hunter, always being two steps ahead of the enemy and having a plan for everything. Thankfully my animal companion was able to assist in my planning rather than being a lead weight.

I fully agree. Not sure why they chose to nerf it so badly. But it is par for course with PHB ranger IMO 😑
