Trying to DM a Ranger correctly and want the Ranger to have all the right attacks and damage modifiers and I'm a little confused.
If the Ranger has the Two-Weapon Fighting style and Horde Breaker and have reached Level 5 earning them the Extra Attack, how many short sword swings can they make with a sword in each hand?
Like if they were surrounded by Hobgoblins and Attack Hoboblin-A, do they attack HG-A with Primary and Secondary hand and also use Horde Breaker to swing a third swing at HB-B (assuming Hobgoblin-B is within 5 ft)? Or does the Extra Attack from reaching Level 5 now mean they can attack HG-A 3 or even 4 times followed by a Horde Breaker swing at HB-B?
I'm confused.
Is Round Attack: Primary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, Secondary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, Horde Breaker Attack Hobgoblin B
or does 2-weapon style plus horde breaker plus extra attack mean:
Primary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, Secondary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, Primary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, Secondary Hand Attack Hobgoblin A, AND Horde Breaker Attack Hobgoblin B

Four. There's no tricky interactions here. Everything does exactly what it says. Keep in mind there's no notion of "primary" and "secondary" hands.
Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
So that's two, guaranteed. They could use the same weapon both times, or use a different weapon for each attack; the rules don't place any restrictions on this. They can also choose to move between these attacks.
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
Bonus Actions
You can take only one bonus action on your turn, so you must choose which bonus action to use when you have more than one available.
You choose when to take a bonus action during your turn, unless the bonus action's timing is specified, and anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions also prevents you from taking a bonus action.
After making one attack with their Attack action, they can make another attack using their other weapon as a bonus action. They don't have to take the bonus action immediately. They only get 1 bonus action per turn, so this can only happen once, and they wouldn't also be able to cast Hunter's Mark that turn.
That's three.
Horde Breaker
Once on each of your turns when you make a weapon attack, you can make another attack with the same weapon against a different creature that is within 5 feet of the original target and within range of your weapon.
And there's the fourth. This feature doesn't care if they use the Attack action or not, so they could combine it with Whirlwind Attack at 11th level.
To continue this conversation, what does it look like to combine Horde Breaker with Whirlwind Attack. Use the example of a Level 12 Ranger, wielding a rapier and shortsword, who has 20 DEX fighting against a large pack of wolves.

"Time is money. Nobody knows how much time they have, but you can always count how much time you spent. So spend it wisely."
What happens if all of the above is done AND they cross classed into a monk and use flurry of blows for two more attacks?? Lol
Nothing, because flurry of blows requires a bonus action, which was already used for the off-hand weapon attack.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
