Meh, my gloomstalker is fun to play and has never benefited from the darkness as it happens, we just haven't gone anywhere that's full dark. But I'd love to try a horizon walker some day, or a drakewarden or a swarmkeeper.
I am not saying gloomstalker is useless in light, but hunter is better from round 2 onwards or after level 11 better as long as there is no relevant darkness
The Rangers can be both good and bad, Depending on the edition of D&D you play. If you are prone to play AD&D ( 1E and 2E; Incld Player's Option, & DM Option HBs, & PHBS ) the Ranger can have many great points for play options. But as I said it depends on the Edition you play as to how good or bad they are and if you use "The Complete Ranger's Handbook" and use some of the kits from the Ranger's handbook they can make a very versatile class, broken quite quickly. So choose your build by the edition you are playing and choose wisely. If you have questions or need elaboration just ask me.
Yes to both. And also highly situationally dependent. Without that darkness...

I'm level 8, haven't had a single 'dark' dungeon or castle, or even room, to use my Umbral Sight in.
Guess who's still killing shit? Yea, the Gloom Stalker with a Bow and Zephyr Strike/Sharpshooter, and Spike Growth, and picking off casters.
2014 5E mostly
3.5 maybe.
Yes. Rangers are awesome.

Role-Playing: Living dangerously for pretend
Ranger can’t possibly be the worst class in game on account that monk exists.
