Recently, I was playing some final fantasy vi, and decided to try to make one of the characters in dnd. I decided upon shadow, the assassin. It was just for fun, but now I think my build would be sort of broken: a gloom stalker ranger with thrown weapon fighting style. Take sharpshooter at level 4, then speedy at level 8. Now, you can do this: on turn one, move 30 feet forward towards your enemy. Cast hunters mark, then fling two darts at them, using dread strike on the first one. 1d4+5+1d6+2d6 on the first hit, 1d4+5+1d6 on the second, average 29 damage. Then move 20 ft back. Next turn, move 20 feet forward, fling 3 daggers at them, move 20 ft back. Average 30 damage. Repeat turn two. You can do this from 80 feet away, because of speedy and sharpshooter. It's not as powerful as dual wielding scimitars, but it's from range, so it's about even. Is this good, or is there a much better way to do this?

I'm just your everyday dungeon master. Ignore that jar full of souls. And those bones in the corner are just props, don't worry. I'm definitely NOT a lich. Definitely.
Yes, I like beholders. Yes, I curated an exquisite personality for commoner #2864. Yes, my catchphrase is "are you sure?"
Seems legit enough to me. The additional 2d6 from Dreadful Strikes would be limited by your Wisdom modifier so the damage would drop off after 3 or 4 rounds. It's no more "broken" than doing the same first 2 attacks with a short bow (average 31 damage if my math is right).

Shortbow has loading, so you can only do one attack per turn. Also, from round two and beyond you don't use dreadful strike, you just use it on the turn you cast hunters mark, after that it's just three dagger throws.

You are mistaken. Neither longbow nor shortbow have the "loading" property. Shortbow has the "ammunition" and "two-handed" properties, longbow has those plus the "heavy" property. So you can absolutely attack twice in a turn with either one. You would not get the BA two weapon fighting attack, but that leaves your BA free for other things like moving Hunter's Mark. The loading property is only on crossbows (and blowguns and firearms).
Also if you're not using Dreadful Strikes after the 1st round then my point stands - the damage drops off immediately after the first round and the build still isn't any more broken than an 8th level ranger with a bow (and it gives you the flavor you want of a thrown weapon Ranger).
The only other downside I see is carrying enough daggers to keep throwing 3 per turn. Generally there are 20 arrows in a quiver. At 2/round that would last 10 rounds. At 3 daggers per round you'd have to be a walking knife block to continue making ranged attacks for very long. A bandolier of darts though could be a good look...

Look at boomerang, I believe the weight is given as 0, if you miss you get it returned. Not sure if you can dual wield them as I was not thinking of that tactic.
