My horizon walker ranger is just about to reach level 5 and I as a plane walker me and my DM have been changing a bunch of things to make more physical sense for my character.
This includes changing the Detect portal ability to be a tattoo of the plane map and a compass on my arm given to me by my father rather then just randomly knowing it. This tattoo also slowly gets larger as we level up becoming more and more interesting as I level up and get stronger.
We also have said that this plane walking abilities come from this God the DM made up and he has no idea about this but he was given this knife early on by his father that has the symbol of this God on it.
What I'm asking in a roundabout way is that when I get the misty step spell I want to do something cool with it since it is the first "transport" like ability I get. Would it be possible if I could use the knife as sort of a opener into the planes before jumping in and teleporting. Would this work as a bonus action because as a archer I would have to draw the knife, make the slice in the planes, jump in, put the knife back then start firing arrows. Would it actually work?
Apologies for the wall of text, I thought some context might be nice. Any help would be nice and any other solutions/ ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
Sounds like you just need to use "the rule of cool" which states that, "If it looks/feels cool and doesn't give you an in game advantage, then just do it!"
In this case, the act of drawing and using the knife is just a visual thing - it's a cool description of how the character is casting the spell and doesn't result in any sort of mechanical benefit for doing so.
In my games, I encourage my players to do stuff like this, to describe things and make the game more interesting.

Ultimately it's up to your DM. :)

"We got this, no problem! I'll take the twenty on the left - you guys handle the one on the right!"🔊
That's fair, I thought as much. I was mostly intrigued if others would allow it in their games so thanks for that :)
