I'm considering a (UA revised ranger) with monster hunter conclave. I haven't gotten past the concept yet, but I'm a little bit sad that I won't get a companion, short of somehow gaining a familiar.
Would you as a DM allow me to run a second character: a dog with levels in fighter, for example?
I would however allow you to purchase a pet dog, and train it in your downtime to perform certain commands (sit/stay/etc. being average to teach, attacking/scouting/helping being difficult to teach). You would be able to use your dog in combat if it were properly trained, though it would have the same risk as a normal dog of dying in combat.

That would also work and is something I'd be willing to do.
The character concept is one I plan on continuing, but the companion thing is just looking at possibilities to suggest to my DM.
Yeah, that’s is a no from me, buy a pet mastiff, alternatively homebrew a version of Find Familiar that only summons a dog, or do what I did. Take the ritual caster feat, select Wizard and take the Find Familiar as one of the two you get
there is also this...
Onyx Dog (Rare). This onyx statuette of a dog can become a mastiff for up to 6 hours. The mastiff has an Intelligence of 8 and can speak Common. It also has darkvision out to a range of 60 feet and can see invisible creatures and objects within that range. Once it has been used, it can't be used again until 7 days have passed.
ya should be a pet, remember rangers can choose the speak with animals spell; any dm will likely allow the use of that spell to expedite the training process. perhaps even advanced tricks... like math and stuff
I would say no to a dog with Character levels, but pets are a definite thing. No reason you cannot befriend one. Might be able to teach it tracking and limited detection using their sense of smell, or acting as a guard dog.

But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
As a more reasonable option to pets with class levels, you might be able to get it classless character levels to increase its hit dice number, proficiency bonus, and even ASIs if the DM allows it.

I'd probably have you make daily animal handling checks and have some experience chart. Perhaps borrow the planeswalker mechanic. I'd consider the warrior sidekick.
I would not want even the revised ranger in use. The lack of book format, the mire of do they have that ability or is that ranger, or alternate ranger? queries slows things down. However If the idea of the character and the group can only support it as revised then sure.
Having an extra 'something' that deals more damage and is a separate character in a reskinned form?
No to the extra something - no to casters dealing double damage because they cast spells with two hands, no to melee users dealing double damage dice because the weapons are oversized.
No to extra characters for one player as an adjunct to them. *Sometimes, sure if your running a one or two person one shot and you want to simulate a party and all players have similar starting resource, but what would require one player to have two effective characters?
If your only concern is having a pet companion then its beastmaster, taking the magic initiate feat for find familiar or seeing if your DM would consider allowing you to have the paladin find steed spell. That last one would be homebrew.
Regardless of what you end up playing, enjoy playing it.

So you want to play your ranger AND a dog, and the dog has the stats of a Fighter? Is that what you are asking?
I would not.

I could see changing the use to a once a day

Jesus Saves!... Everyone else takes damage.
Who needs an abacus when you have Clever Hans?
