1d6 + ability +1d8 hunters mark (maybe an extra +1d8)for attack one then
1d6 + ability +1d8 HM + 1d8 colossus slayer
I don't know how that stacks up with other classes, but that seems potentially really amazing.
Human ranger with the Dexterity of 18 and Sharpshooter Feat takes the -5 to the roll, so it's 1d8 +4 +d6 +d8 +10. Seventeen minimum damage, now he's 5th level, so 34 minimum damage on two hits. Zoinks! My son's ranger Magnus has been a killing machine for months now. His TK Count (Total Kill, gives a minor bonus XP for the player in my games) is well ahead of anyone else in the group.
And probably high Wisdom and/or proficiency in Perception. If they can spot small creatures on the way to an iron fortress, they can see a fly at 600 yards.
And I know rangers lack options such as clairvoyance, but they can use locate creature to detect a fly at 1000 feet.
I'm trying the new UA deep stalker conclave and have a dual wielding lvl 4 wood elf and he's a damage dealing machine on round one.
Natural Explorer: You have advantage on initiative rolls. On your first turn during combat, you have advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not yet acted.
Underdark Scout: On your first turn during combat, you gain a +10 bonus to your speed, and if you use the Attack action, you can make one additional attack.
Then 18 dex, dual wield short swords, and add Hunter's Mark.
1d6+4+1d6, 1d6+4+1d6, 1d6+4+1d6, 1d6+4+1d6 (and that could also be +2 damage on each if Favored Enemy) - and all of that with advantage on attack rolls
So if everything hits, min 24 damage, max 64
Oh, and at lvl 5 he gets extra attack. So... add another 12-32 damage.
Recently, my party spotted the cliché bandit camp from afar. The sorcerer climbed one tree, my Ranger another. He had spell sniper, I had sharpshooter. We were about 300 ft out, with line of sight. One fireball and one hail of Thorns later, all bandits dead or fled. Not often that we get to really make use of our range, probly cause the DM knows those encounters will be completely one-sided. But oh how satisfying it was for that one time.

So a 3rd level ranger with two weapons can do
1d6 + ability +1d8 hunters mark (maybe an extra +1d8)for attack one then
1d6 + ability +1d8 HM + 1d8 colossus slayer

Hunter's mark gives you an extra 1d6, not 1d8. But yes, I agree that the ranger is great.
Paladin do keep up with Divine Smite.
We all leave footprints in the sands of time.
Just chiming in. Yes Ranger can be OP if the right feats and stats are taken.
Unless there is some cruddy die rolls chances are I'm the DPS for any encounter.
Also, shout out to the Dad/Mom DM's. Raising them right! :D
Aaaah... [feat]Sharpshooter[/feat].
Longbow attacks at 600 yards without disadvantage.
I know it's not as useful in a game, but what can I say? I like the fantasy of splitting the wings of a fly at half a mile.
I think I'd be more impressed that the ranger can see the fly at half a mile. That must be one huge pile of poo!

Two words: Elf eyes!

The archery ability plus sharpshooter feat in general is just one of those things. Just like polearm master on a Paladin to fish for crits.
You could also put the fighter in this boat. More attacks. Superiority dice.
There are certainly some combat monster builds out there.
