Can i teach my companion how to use certain tools such as a thieves tools? I know its companion dependent but do you know of a general rule as to which can or cannot?
There's no rules that forbid or allow it, but beasts generally lack the intellegence and opposable thumbs needed to learn a trade and have fine control over tools.
If your DM is the rule-of-cool sort, s/he might let you train a crow to open locks with thieves tools. Still not likely to succeed due to lack of opposable thumbs, though.
You should probably consider a Pact of the Chain Warlock's familiar instead.

That is an ask you DM situation. I wouldn't expect much though.
