No, you don't need to multiclass. I would say that giant poisonous snake is better, in terms of damage, but flying snake is good. I would say pick a race with wisdom and dexterity increases, like wood elf or hill dwarf. Human and half elf are also good. For tactics, I would say look at the article 'Class 101: Beast master'.
