So I've been reading the Green Rider series, (just finished book 5) and I want to play a messenger. So I figured rogue scout would be the way to go.
Race would probably be something elven, maybe half elf, because I like the idea that they never fit into either their father's or their mother's worlds. So he decides to live between worlds, dodging bandits and monsters while delivering messages.
I would like him to be able to find any one or any thing so a multiclass to get some detection spells would be great. I was thinking Ranger, but I can't decide on a subclass. Beastmaster might be good and give him a dog or horse companion.
I'm not married to the race, so if anyone has suggestions on how they'd build a messenger type character, who knows how to survive and find their guy, I'd appreciate it.
Being relatively new, I don't know much else then Rogues... So I kinda reply anyway, maybe throwing something you might not have thought of.
Your Scout choices is also what I think the best for your type of character, maybe up to level 9 (for the extra movement speed).
Ranger also seems like a great multiclass option. Natural Explorer, some Archery fighting style (can't deliver a message if you are caught and die) to keep at range, that combos well with scout... However the "Locate Creatures" spells from Primal Awareness is at level 13...
Thinking about it, maybe Divination Wizard might be useful? Portent isn't bad You'd get Locate Creature (a 4th level spell) at Wizard 7. You could also use Find Greater Steed. Sending is also a VERY good option for a messenger. You could play around Locate Object (other spellcaster could work really) if you have a specific "deliver to the holder of this 'beacon-type' item"...
I guess it depends on how you want to go about with finding your message's target.
You might want to get the Wanderer Background...
As for race... Aarakocra would be busted, but very fitting for a messenger. Tabaxi might be cool too (Climb speed, great for "town traversing", not as OP as Aarakocra haha). Human (Mark of Passage) for Phantom Steed would be very nice (unlocked with wizard level 5).
I'm sorry if my answer feels incomplete; not my forte like I said, but perhaps I'll have thrown you something to work on!
