So I’ve got it in my head for a a rogue character that has a widespread infamy among the wealthy & influential…specifically, they are a Rogue who specializes from stealing from powerful people, so much so that they have become a romanticized figure within the upper class.
Essentially, this Rogue is a gentleman (or woman) thief that most people believe is just a superstitious legend…right up until they’re robbed by them.
My writer’s block has me struggling what to call this Rogue’s thieving “persona”.
”Waterdeep: Dragon Heist” has a great example for such a character, the NPC known as The Black Viper: a notorious mugger & thieve who resembles Zorro.
Similarly, there was a character from the movie “Ocean’s Twelve” called The Night Fox, who would leave a fox-shaped calling card in the places where they stole their valuables from.
Basically, I thought it would be neat to hear peoples “mysterious” or “classy” sounding name ideas for a famous thief.
The Black Adder. I know, I know, but the name is great.
The Barefoot Bandit.
Francois Villon.
The Scarlet Bandit.
The Black Adder actually sounds really great…and I can imagine the shenanigans should they ever cross paths with The Black Viper. XD
I also like The Scarlet Bandit…I’m picturing the use of the color red in the costume design: like a red bandana for a mask; or a long crimson scarf or sash.
Actually, The Red Sashes are an order of vigilantes in Waterdeep; so that’s a possible story hook, too.
I have a character in my long list of characters I might someday play whose current name is Ledger Demaine; it's supposed to be just a silly a placeholder but it's really grown on me.
I mean you can call a "famous" thief just about anything, what makes them famous isn't the name, it's the deeds. Even a name like "Bart Skunkscrew" can become famous, especially if he gets a reputation for visiting misfortune on those who laugh at his name…

Reminds me of the Web DM’s rogue character, Robin Steel.
I suppose the purpose of the request is the “name” that the nobility or powerful would give this person, who manages to consistently steal from them without getting caught.
Their actual name (the character name) would be a mystery.
Think the “Faceless” background; and that more or less provides the concept.

Back in the AD&D days, I played a thief who went by the name "Griffin" and he would leave a calling card with a Griffin on it.

I had a thief named Trojan Onefinger once. He could steal more with one finger in one day than most others could steal with ten fingers in ten days.
He eventually acquired a pseudo dragon he named Ribbed.
