Yes, I have looked at Arcane Trickster, but I’d rather be more of a RP Bounty Hunter and surprise round damage than a versatile theif. Would I go Sorcerer or Warlock? (I only want to take 3 of each unless there’s is a super key ability I’m missing).
If you only want three levels of caster, why do you want them? Obly the concept of casting or particular spells? I would suggest ranger 5 for similar amount of spells, but much better synergy through gloomstalker :)
then you get 2nd attack, and 3rd attack duing assassination surprise - great synergy. You also get relevant spellls like silence, rope trick, hunters mark and the one that grants group +10 to hide which is better than invisibility in 5e.
I forgot Ranger is a spellcaster even though my most experienced character is a ranger. Totally forgot about gloomstalker. Thanks. I will heavily consider it.
Another option is monk 6 with the shadow subclass from players handbook. That also works well with a rogue assassin, and gives relevant spellcasting :)
I have a concept for a yuan-ti pureblood assassin rogue with the magic initiate feat. Even just a handful of low-level magical tricks can be fun and interesting without necessarily multiclassing.

I think this is a good way to approach wanting just a little flavor of another class. The magic Initiate (plus taking a race that has some magic to boot) gives you some nifty options without losing out on your core class abilities, or slowing down your progression.

I don't want to clog up this thread with homebrew discussion if you're only interested in figuring out a way to achieve your magical assassin through official subclass/feat options, but fwiw, I recently released Fellozial's Ultimate Guide to Poison through DMs Guild, and included in the supplement is a new rogue subclass called "Arcane Assassin" which I suspect might be exactly what you're looking for. If you're interested in more details, let me know and I'll describe the subclass features more fully...

OK, sure... The Arcane Assassin subclass presented in Fellozial's allows rogues to learn magic through dedicated study, but unlike with the Arcane Trickster, that study focuses on more deadly forms of magic... spells of evocation and necromancy. When coupled with a rogue's stealth and deception skills, the result is a formidable killer most victims never see coming.
At lower levels the subclass grants proficiency in the Arcana skill and Alchemists's Supplies and also limited spellcasting very similar to the spellcasting feature of Tricksters. In addition, the Arcane Assassin learns Furtive Rituals as he/she advances through levels, useful when preparing for or engaging in assassination attempts, infiltration, or subterfuge: spells like detect poison/disease, silence, meld into stone, Drawmij's instant summons, etc. (but these can only be cast as rituals). Later they develop advantage on spell attack rolls against creatures that haven't yet taken a turn, and spell hits vs surprised creatures are always critical hits. At even higher levels the subclass imposes disadvantage on targets' saves vs spells while you are hidden, and at 17th level, the character gains a feature that more or less mirrors the Spell Sniper feat.

Warlock with Hexblade patron can definitely work.
