I'm currently playing a combat oriented Battle Master in a campaign where the focus is on the social as well as political intrigue, and not so much on combat. While role playing someone who blunders around in a milieu he can't really grasp can be amusing, I am finding it very one dimensional and so am considering retiring the character in favour of something with more versatility. As my current character is one of the party tanks - combat does happen - I am looking for a build that can hold their own in combat, while still contributing outside of combat. The party already has a Bard, a class against which I have deeply held prejudices anyway, so that's out as an option. The party also includes a Warlock, a Sharpshooting Ranger and another Fighter, all at ninth level. My DM will allow me to come in at ninth, with some basic magic items, like the rest of the party.
So here's what I am thinking: https://ddb.ac/characters/43689028/8eCd89 This is a Charisma based Half Elf, 8th level Swashbuckler, 1st level Hexblade, Criminal/Spy background. Half Elf to get the 2 extra skill proficiencies, +2 to Charisma and Darkvision; Swashbuckler to get the Rogue skills, Expertise, Sneak Attack and combat utility; and Hexblade to get Charisma based melee weapon bonuses, as well as Shield proficiency, Hex, and some very basic spell casting, including the Booming Blade cantrip. I used Point Buy for attributes and was able to get my Charisma to 20 using an ASI and the Shadow Touched (Charisma) Feat, which also brought some useful spells. By using my Expertise choices on non Charisma skills, I achieve pretty good modifiers for a wide variety of skills. I see his role in the party as the sneaky spy, and so chose proficiencies, like Investigation, Perception, Disguise Kit, Stealth and Insight, to support that.
I am wondering what you think of this build and if anyone has any ideas I may have over looked.
Thanks in advance.
