I should be playing my first DnD one-shot in a long while tomorrow and want some last minute advice. I love the Verdan race as a sort of variant of the Goblin i grew to love in World of Warcraft, but the fact is unless I take Warcaster I cannot use a shield via my Hexblade dip while using spells. …right?
So I’m leaving it up to you all!
From a performance standpoint I think the answer of which to pick is obvious, but if someone can give me some good reasons to pick the other I might give it a try!
Please note that the DM is granting gear to help us mitigate our starting set, so despite not having armor or a shield I more than likely will be able to get a pair of each before we start. I just don’t know what yet. If i get the choice, is there anything you all would recommend?
P.S. If there is anything else you would recommend I change, feel free to mention it. Just please be nice; like I said: I have been out of the game for quite some time.
Check with your DM if your pact weapon (IIRC Hexblade can use it as a spellcasting focus) can be the same one to do somatic components. Some interpretations of strict RAW create issues with somatic components when no material components and trying to use a focus in the Somatic hand. But most DMs are going to be fine with a focus being in hand when doing somatic for spells without a material component.
That might take away your concerns thinking you need warcaster.
You could use custom lineage to make a non-human with a feat so you can get warcaster, and flavor your character as a verdan.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
You might be able to tie your weapon to your wrist with string. Drop your weapon as a free action, cast your spell and pick your weapon up as object interaction. Something to discuss with your DM if they do apply spell component RAW.
I’m pretty sure the hexblade pact weapon is an elsritch invocation called improved pact weapon that I can’t get until level 3, and even then it’s the same as using my staff as far as I know.
i’m not sure the string thing will fly with my DM. I’m already picking a very overpowered build (albeit I don’t really know how and more for flavor).
i guess I will just have to flavor it as a Verdan; it just seemed like they had a lot of cool abilities that made them what they are and if people didn’t think shields made that much of a difference I would just stick with Verdan.
Thank you to everyone who replied to this message! For those curious, I went with the Warcaster build and was given epic armor and an epic shield, raising my AC from 12 to 18 as well as granting abilities. I ended up getting a nat 20 on my first Eldritch Blast ever!!!
