Context: I have never played a spell caster in 5e. I have usually been stuck playing tank so I know Barbarians and Fighters like the back of my hand. I have finally been given the opportunity to play a spellcaster in a new group and of course it's Descent into Avernus...... Now I have never played it, but I have a general idea that it has fiends in it because I was thinking of getting it originally for myself... But Fiends have magic resistance... Sweeeeeeet...
As such, I decided to play the healer/support. I have never been a fan of clerics from a flavor perspective. Though I did entertain the idea. I was going to originally go with a Yuan-ti Bard. But decided against it as I thought I'd like to provide more heals.
As such, I decided on a Divine Soul Sorc.
Now... My issue lies with the races. I don't want to play Half-elf and looking for something with more flavor.
So far I have 3 options.
1. Aasimar.
Get resistance to both Radiant and Necrotic.
Healing Hands (Free Heals).
Dark Vision.
Free Light Cantrip.
Celestial Language
1A Protector
Flying at lvl 1
extra damage per spell
+1 Wis
1B Scourge -
AOE Damage (but also hurt me, I squishy tho),
extra damage per spell
+1 Con
2. Yuan-ti -
Immune to Poison and
Advantage against Spells and magic effects.
Dark vision.
Free Animal Friendship with Snakes
Poison Spray (Useless against Demons)
Abyssa and Draconic.
3. Kalashtar
Dual Mind- Adv on Wis saving throws as a reaction ( No limits)
Resistance to psychic
Use Telepathy and grant it to someone as a bonus action so they can Telepathically speak back.
Aasimar will give you plenty of flavor though as Aasimar in Nine Hells I am not sure it will be pleasant. On the other hand, there can be a lot of RP opportunities. I would go with Protector over Scourge. I do not think that AoE is useful for a healer. Overall good fir for Divine Soul sorcerer, your origin backs your class very well, you have good reason to go to Nine Hells (to fight evil like one particular angel).
2. Yuan-ti
I never saw an opportunity to play one. Yeah, the racial bonuses are cool (especially Magic resistance) but other racial traits will not help you much in Nine Hells. Most of the fiends will be resistant to charms and poisons. And I really have no idea how would you rationalize Yuan-ti going with the party into Nine Hells from RP standpoint. Abyssal language won't help you much since it is the devils and not demons that you will deal with most of the time. Personally I would definitely not pick this one.
3. Kalashtar
Isn't Kalashtar Eberron race? I am not sure how would you put it into Baldur's Gate Forgotten Realms setting. Maybe you can roleplay that you are connected to some spirit from fallen Eltruel? Mechanically advantage for persuasion checks might be gold. Overall not bad race o pick up if you can persuade DM to allow it.
Another option might be a Tiefling. Going into Nine Hells as Tiefling might be RP gold too. Imagine how would devils react to you. They might be extra careful around you seeing in you some spy from another layer. You can be someone connected to Hellriders of Eltruel who originally went to nine hells with that one angel, maybe your paladin ancestor let some devil tarnish his lineage with devilish taint in some pact and you are the result. Some angelic protector of said paladin gave you sorcerer powers to help prove that you are not evil or to help you overcome your hellish nature. Mechanically Tieflings are a good fit for sorcerers and with dozen types of tieflings, you can pick what suits you the best. Levistus gives you +2 CHA + 1 CON, on-demand Ray of Frost cantrip (damage will not hell you much since a lot of fiends are resistant to elements but it can slow), an additional 10 health points per long rest in form of Armor of Agathys and Darkness spell. You will be able to speak Infernal.
Very well put. The way I was going to approach Yuan-Ti would have been from the angle that he believes that his powers were bestowed to him by Sseth. Idea is that he thinks that as the descendant of Sseth, he needs to fight against Devil, as Sseth is a Demon and Devils and Demon's are in an internal war. He however has almost zero ability to fight for himself and recognizes the need to utilize others as a means to his "Holy War".
Never really thought of Tiefling as so many people play it. I like to avoid the "Mainstream" races. But yea, That would be interesting for sure. The 1+Con Would be gold as well as speaking infernal.
For Kalashtar, I thought if I could maybe just let it pass with the DM, the race would be unreal.
Would Changeling be something you might consider as far as playing Divine Soul Sorcerer? There are fairly strong racial features that I believe are worth considering for this particular campaign.
Changling would also work really well. Didn't think of that either. Great suggestions! Keep them coming! Would also be down for what feats you guys I should go for?
Also for Tielfing spells related to Infernal Legacy. "You know the ray of frost cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the armor of Agathys spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest"
Does that mean it can be cast without expending a spellslot ?

Yes. You can cast Armor of Agathys on the 2nd level once per day when you reach level 3 a once you reach level 5 same applies to Darkness spell. It is a racial option that does not consume any spell slot.
Also even for noncaster (tiefling fighter), the ray of frost will get the scaling (The spell's damage will increase by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8)).
