I know the small stuff is better damage, but I always like animating the bigger stuff for fun. Animate that horse cart the bad guys are hiding behind. Or the wizard desk or sarcophagus next to the big bad.
Can't say I've ever used true polymorph. In theory, it seems like Wish is the winner, but it doesn't necessarily win a whole encounter. I can see Polymorphing into something crazy and just taking care of business.
I agree with Chaos bolt being amazing Sorcerer spell. I especially like it for Wild Magic Sorcerers. Had a player in one of my games play a wild magic Sorc and I gave them this spell as a free spell with the caveat that anytime she got the bounce to go off, she got to choose if she wanted to roll on the wild magic table.
You unleash a destructive wave of mental power in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a target takes 5d8 force damage, is pushed 20 feet directly away from you, and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a target takes half as much damage and isn’t pushed or knocked prone.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 3rd.
The did a similar version of this spell in EGtW, called Pulse Wave. It's very similar to the above spell. Not a big fan of how they made it a Dunamancy only spell. But honestly most DMs I've talked to ignore that requirement.

Amazing, thanks for pointing this out! Will have to check this out.

Does anyone here recall the Psionic Blast spell included in the Unearthed Arcana?

I don't think I've ever seen that one. Definitely going to look it up
Love Chaos Bolt. Haste is pretty cool too.
