Since the UA release of the Undead Warlock Patron I've been putting off an idea for a Dragonborn Warlock. I've loved the concept and flavor of the idea, but the racial mechanics have just been lackluster for me. Tasha's teased me with some potential, but it still wasn't enough bait to hook me into into something.
This new UA with the Dragonborn update though... I'm ready to make this happen, but I need to talk out my ideas.
Obviously I've been thinking Undead Warlock, but Hexblade is always calling my name because I love being in melee. Both are great options, but the Hexblade doesn't have that full unliving flavor and I want to do something different with this.
My next issue steering directly from this is Tome or Blade. Again melee calls to me and Blade is the obvious choice for a Hexblade and a descent choice for the Undead. Tome really carries that everliving thirst for knowledge and that lich flavor of being a caster. I also know Tome can fake it as a Hexblade by grabbing Shillelagh.
After deciding blaster or melee my next big creative block is what kind of Dragonborn? Chromatic for immunity? Metallic for the control? Or Gem for the unique damage types? And which color?
I need help focusing on these 3 big things before I can decide where my build goes...
Tanking: Red - fire is the best type to be resistant to of the available types, and you can be temporarily immune. This is offensively the worst breath type.
Melee Offense: Copper - Acid is the best type offensively of the metallic breaths, and the 1/long rest breaths have excellent synergy with melee, since they work with Thirsting Blade.
Utility: Topaz if Hexblade, Crystal if Undead. Telepathy and Flight are both fantastic, Topaz offers good resistance, and Crystal offers a good backup against targets strong against necrotic.
Pact: Blade if Hexblade, Tome if Undead.
Patron: Can't pick for you. Undead have double damage eb and Hexblades have their famous kit. Choose for yourself.

That's part of my struggle I've got 2 very polar opposite ideas for character builds.
I'm thinking I wanna be a pure Warlock
Amethyst or Copper Undead Tome Warlock
My other idea is
Red Oathbreaker Paladin Hexblade Warlock
I find myself multiclassing a lot because it offers me more customizability, but I really like the flavor of undead lich casting.
If you want to play a full warlock, you'll get to see all the high-level warlock spells, and Invocations
Blade feels a bit incomplete to me without Hexblade, and the extra tome spells always prove to be handy.
Just get an Idea of how each one feels, and decide which you favor more.
These chaps have a good guide/build for just this type of character: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNLf1chg0aI
