For story reasons (and perhaps other perks) I might be interested in turning an Aberant Mind Sorcerer into a Sorlock (very likely would need to be the Archfey, if I were going to do it, again for story reasons).
I've never played a Warlock, should I try to play one in a one-short or mini campaign, before trying something like this? I understand that the way the operate is kind of unique, so perhaps too much change to try to contemplate, with a multiclass to start out with?). The sorcerer character that I have in mind, is one that I am pretty heavily invested in, emotonally (backstory and personaility that I spent some time on and that I'm kind of proud of). Maybe I need to test it out with a character that I am less invested in (I tend to get emotionally invested in my characters).
I guess to get the perks re: spell slots and short rest, I would need one level, right? But then I'd probably want to get to at least 2 levels in order to get Eldritch Invocations (which would be very worth an extra level to have), right? Are there any other considerations on the number of levels? I think my preferences would be to take more Sorcerer than Warlock, but I guess that could change. I mean maybe I'll really like play worlocks.
Also, woud this evn be a good idea to do? I've heard that the Sorlock is good/fun to play and I think it could help out with the story, I guess depending on what happens. Also is there a source of information that you could recommend on playing a Sorlock and the way the thing with spell slot recover on a short rest works?
Sorclock player here! Yep, it's a really fun build.
To answer your last question, your warlock slots are entirely separate from your sorcerer slots. You get these slots back at the end of a short rest or a long rest. Your sorcerer spell slots only recharge on a long rest.
Regarding the multiclassing, if you're only looking for a dip, I'd recommend 3 or 5 levels.
3 levels gets you your invocations and your pact boon, along with two 2nd level spell slots. 5th level gets you an extra invocation and 3rd level slots.
The reason I recommend those two different levels is mainly for sorcery points. You can use your Pact Magic slots for your Font of Magic feature, converting them into SP. Since you get those slots back on a short rest, it's a good way to refill your SP a lot easier than having to wait for a long rest or convert a sorcerer spell slot.
Also, if you have a story for your character in mind, then see if your DM will allow reflavoring of your warlock class to be an extension of that instead of having a "traditional" patron. Maybe they gain their warlock abilities through training or deep meditation, or some other means.
I play a character with an even split as part of her multiclass (5 levels of each) and essentially just use my warlock slots as a battery for metamagic. She's an undead warlock who was bitten by a vampire, but they're flavored as her gaining more familiarity with her vampirism instead of the vampire lending her his power.
