i have had an idea and my dm said he it was a cool concept but it needs a motivation
the idea is a great old one warlock who read a forbidden play and now believes themselves the rightful emperor of some empire or other

if i say something inflammatory the intention is not to trigger an emotional response and the fact that it does so is purely accidental and I sincerely apologise if it does
Maybe the “emperor” in this play gained his power from the “Great Old One”, a bargain of sorts. “You serve me and I will give you the power to conquer all that you see.
Maybe after reading this play, your character began receiving dreams of glory in combat, of lands falling under the control of a new emperor. After maybe a month of these visions of power, similar to that of the character in the play, your character is visited in another dream by the same entity who offered power to the character of the play, offering the same deal, with the implication that the old empire would be included as a sort of inheritance paired with the powers of the old emperor.
thanks for the ideas its an interesting angle. but i was personally inspired by the short story the repairer of reputations but again your advice is appreciated

A bit late to this one but have you considered ripping off Star Wars? The GOO read the novelisation of Star Wars and thinks he is Emperor Palpatine and he/she/it is training the Warlock to be his/her/its apprentice ala Darth Vader, you don;t really need to be evil, just a bit megalomaniacal at times. Maybe you need your apprentice, the PC, to find a special crystal which is the final component to some super weapon which the GOO is building to stave off an attack from, and potnetially kill, another GOO thereby saving the material plane and letting your GOO rule as emperor.

an interesting proposition i have been considering having his motive to be to reunite the four parts of a McGuffin which he thinks will mark him as the rightful heir but it will actually let the GOO in to our reality ushering in a new age of death and madness where the GOO might leave him the ruins once it grows bored
