Worse, IMO. The pact magic mechanics make it incredible. It's a blaster class, use up all of your spells in a battle (which are upcast to the highest possible level), and then short rest to get it all back. Warlocks are pretty amazing.
Half casters wait a lot longer to get each spell level; only getting 5th level spells once they reach 17th level! Warlocks are much better off with Pact Magic, which gives them 5th level spells 8 levels earlier. At 17th level, they should get their 9th level Mystic Arcana, not a lousy 5th level spell slot.
As others have said, pact magic is better. The only advantage of half caster is that it stacks with other classes spell slots. The change that should be made is making Eldritch Blast a class feature rather than a cantrip. That way it would scale with class level instead of character level and not incentivise everyone to dip into warlock.
If eldritch blast was a feature, what level would you get it? Would it be an invocation? The warlock is already great as it is, there is no need to change it. The warlock is practically made for Multiclass in my opinion. You get invocations at 2nd level, eldritch blast at 1st, and it’s easy to role play into. ‘Why does your paladin have a class in warlock?’ He made a pact with Cthulhu in his dreams overnight.
Not to mention, it’s a great class on it’s own. Half of the invocations just buff the #1 can trip in the game. What would you do if it wasn’t a can Trip?
I love warlocks, my concern is that it's too good for multiclassing. My main change would be that Eldritch Blast would scale by class level instead of character level, so taking a 2 level dip wouldn't make you as good at using it as a pure warlock. You would still get it at first level and it would work the same for a single class warlock. I might give agonizing blast for free at second or third level. Warlock is a very front loaded class and I don't like how you can get 50% of the class from a 2 or 3 level dip. A sorlock is just as good as a pure warlock of the same level at Eldritch Blast, but can do it more often.
The thing is, you don’t. There are plenty of things you can get at 5th, 9th, and other levels with your Eldridge Invications. And you get 6-9th level spells. You gain a lot more from pure warlocks than any Warlock/Sorcerer. Fir instance, casting detect magic and alter self at will. Invisibility. Conjure elementals. And it all come back on a short rest.

This seems like a good way to fall out of favor with a Paladins God/Goddess and/or move in a direction that contradicts their convictions.

DM: Are you sure?
Wizard: Yes. I cast the Wish spell and I wish that everybody loves me!
DM: You transform into an irresistible, magnificent feast. It was so great, all who participated in devouring you tell of the joy they felt with tears in their eyes and all who hear the tale only feel sorrow that they weren't there to eat.
Paladins in 5e don't have anything to do with gods or goddesses; they gain power from following their Oath, not form any divine origin. They're perfectly compatible with Warlocks so long as the Warlock patron furthers their Oath (or the other way around).
...that depends on the Paladin. Besides, if you would have read the end of my sentence, it covers what you said.

Would the warlock be better or worse of a class if it was just a half caster instead of the unique pact magic mechanic?

No contest.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
