So we are approaching lvl 4 and I am stuck on what to do. Do I take 2 skill points or a feat, stats are as follows
Half-Elf Fiendlock, Pact of the Tome Str 15 Dex 16 Con 15 Int 16 Wis 16 Cha 19 I have 5 Cantrips from Warlock lvl and Book of Shadows Chill Touch, Eldritch Blast, Shocking Grasp, Thaumaturgy and Mage Hand 4 Spells known Armor of Agathys, Suggestion, Hex, Mirror Image Eldritch Invocations Agonising Blast, Book of Ancient Secrets 2 Rituals Find Familiar and Identify (once I have 50gp I will also add unseen servant from a spell book we found)
Any ideas for lvl 5 to look at as well if you have them. Although I have my uses in combat our DM gives us lots of RP heavy sessions too which I really enjoy!
I’d bump your charisma up by 1 to max it out. That leaves you with another 1 for your strength if you’re likely to pick the Resilient (Constitution) feat at 8th level or for your Constitution if you’re likely to pick the War Caster feat at 8th level. Either choice is good so pick your favorite.
Do you have any spells that you’ve never used? If you do drop that spell and replace it with another one to see if you like a different spell better. Since your DM goes in for heavy role playing I’d suggest picking a non combat spell that you can use during role playing sessions and probably an invocation that’s meant for role playing at 5th level. It sounds like you’ll have more fun doing that than picking only combat options, so do what you’ll enjoy the most.
I agree with Tim on getting your charisma up to 20 being a priority especially since you are pact of Tome and don't seem to be going the melee warlock route based on your selections. As warlocks have just the 2 spell slots at this level, it is really key that they are successful when used which means maximizing the chance to hit on your spell attacks or upping your save DC when you are using suggestion. Also since you will more likely be fighting from a distance, I would advise increasing your constitution rather than your strength with the other skill point. Not only will this help you maintain concentration and give you more HP, it really helps vs spells which cause a lot of troublesome physical effects.
You gain an additional known spell at level 4 as well and I would advise for battlefield control. Hold Person in particular is excellent as it will continue to scale very well with your increase in spell slot level. Shatter is a solid AOE damage spell for warlocks who don't get many AOE damage options.
When you hit level 5 and get your 3rd invocation, I would suggest Mask of Many Faces if you are RP heavy and it would be helpful to cast disguise self at will. Even in combat I have had some fun with this- my DM let me change my appearance to that of a zombie and it caused all kinds of confusion when I ran into the middle of an undead army and started causing mayhem. The zombies had disadvantage on attacks against me as I looked like all of them and they couldnt figure out which person to attack.
If you want a highly optimal choice, take Elven Accuracy, and +1 CHA. You max your primary stat, and now you roll 3d20s whenever you have advantage. Put your familiar in an owl form; have it fly in and give the Help action, and fly away, as owls don't cause opportunity attacks when they leave melee. Fire your EB, rolling 3d20 to hit.
At level 5, take Darkness as a spell and Devil's Sight as an invocation. Fire two EBs with every attack, both with 3d20.
Guys cheers for the response (sorry for the delay in replying, maxed out at work lol).
I definitly think I will be going the Elven Accuracy route, maxing out my CHA and probably look at the battlefield control as that will give me and the party advantages. The only problem I see with taking Darkness at lvl 5 is that we haven't had a single fight yet where there has been enough space that would use it without screwing everyone else up and we are planning to go through Dungeon of the Mad Mage next after finishing Waterdeep Heist, so not sure whether it will help there either? So will probably go the RP route and take Mask of Many, my familiar has already come in handy in spider form, electrocuting the shit out of a thug in our last fight (I had left him on our Paladins shoulder from earlier on in the night lol). Again cheers for the help, see you back here at lvl 5 decision time lol
