abilities are dice rolls. Criminal/Spy background. Chaotic neutral. Player Manual. Striker role. IDK what the rest of the party is playing I was just told I could join because they were starting a new campaign. Even RP and combat. IDK max level. I'm open to multiclassing.
Melee striker of ranged blaster? Warlocks can melee pretty well, but agonizing blast builds require less specialization and can therefore be more versatile and customizable.
Alright, I suggest fiend patron, prioritize CHA and DEX first/second (depending on range preference) CON third, the rest how you like. For spells, meet Hex. Hex will be your main leveled combat spell. Fiend gets access to some good AOE spells including burning hands which you will upgrade to fireball at level 5. Don't underestimate control spells like charm/hold person, and be sure to grab a few utility spells for out of battle.
If you plan on going melee, starting 1-2 levels of fighter will get you any armor/weapons you want, plus some other useful features. Multiclassing not mandatory if you want better spells faster.
For warlock levels, at level 2 you get invocations. Ranged blasters should get agonizing blast and repelling blast (or grasp of hadar). Armor of shadows is good for melee builds. At level 3, you get pact boons. They are all good in their own way. Pact of the blade is only good for melee really, pact of the tome is great for utility and versatility, pact of the chain is good for adventuring/exploring.
I play a Tiefling HexBlade and love it. Trying to build up my melee abilties while using a Glaive (Polearm).
As long as you take Agonizing Blast you are set for awesome ranged combat and most of the warlocks pacts and etc are viable for fun play. But I do love the versatility of the warlock class.
How Should I set up my character if I'm starting at level 1?
How are you determining your abilities: standard array, point buy, dice rolls, or other?
What kind of tiefling/warlock? What sourcebooks do you want access to? Have you picked a background?
Warlocks are very customisable, what kind of role do you want to fill? What is the rest of the party playing?
What kind of campaign is it going to be (expect a lot of combat or more RP)? How high of a level will you get (will you level up at all)?
How do you feel about multiclassing?
You didn't give us much to go on.
