I am creating a side-quest in the Descent into Avernus in Baldur's Gate, where there is a warlock who has a demon as their patron. They are working to frustrate the efforts to pull Baldur's Gate into hell in order to keep the devils from receiving the boon of all those souls. This warlock will be pact of the blade/fiend patron, and I want them to have a Berserker Battleaxe as their pact weapon.
The curse reads, in part:
Curse. This hammer is cursed, and becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the hammer, keeping it within reach at all times. You also have disadvantage on attack rolls with weapons other than this one, unless no foe is within 60 feet of you that you can see or hear.
Given that the pact of the blade can summon their pact weapon with only an action, do folks think that this warlock can dismiss the axe as most pact of the blade warlocks can? The curse stipulates that the axe can never be out of reach, but this seems like a gray area.
I haven't played Descent, but the wording of that Curse suggests that the intent is for the person attuned to the axe will want it physically present at all times. It feels like the owner thinks of it kinda like Linus and his blanket. :)
That's totally fair. I was just hoping for the flair of the warlock summoning the axe from thin air, but I think yours is probably the proper interpretation.

If for no other reason than if it could be magically dismissed then Eldritch Knights and Bladelocks would basically be exempt from that part of the curse, and where's the fun in that? :)
I would say though that if it's forcibly dismissed, like if someone moves a Bladelock away from the axe and keeps them there long enough for it to poof away, they wouldn't necessarily feel the urge to re-summon it. But once they do bring it back out, they feel its pull once again. The issue of what would happen if they try to then make a different weapon their Pact Weapon is an interesting one, though.
I take to be kind of like The One Ring. Frodo is constantly touching and handling his precious. I see this axe being the same way; the warlock is going to be in physical contact as much as possible.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
