Let's say that for the sake of brainstorming, if you weren't limited by the selection of "Pact of the Chain" familiars or the limitations of the "Find Familiar" spell, what sort of familiar would your character conjure?
They would still have to be smaller familiars, of course, so no Medium or Large creatures...but I'm curious to see what people come up with.
How does the familiar tie into a particular Patron?
To specify, these would be Chain familiars that are not Sprites, Quasits, Pseudodragons or Imps.
Faerie dragon or a magmin. Maybe even a will o Wisp. If magmin, it would be fun to change them slightly, so like a mistmin (water) or a shadmin (necrotic damage). But I love faerie dragons so I'd love to have one of them.

The Pact Familiar choices have always bothered me because they directly violate the Sage Advice rule that "nothing should be so good as to be the only real choice." I feel like Imp is this right now for Pact of the Chain. Realistically if they wanted choices it should be any Fiend, Fey, Aberration, Construct, Undead or Elemental of CR1 or below. Both Imp and Quasit are CR1 so it seems like the precedent has already been set by WOTC itself.
Familiars are intended to be either spy's or helper that grand advantage. The most common normal normal familiar is the owl because the fly by helps it grant advantage without getting killed.
All the Warlock familiars with the exception of the Psuedo Dragon are designed to be spies. They change shape and turn invisible.
I would look for another helper familiar. Something Tiny, magical that works to give you advantage.
My candidate, from Ebberon, the Tiny Expeditious Messenger. Yes, it's a a construct. It has flyby AND a telepathic bond that works on the entire plane. Cool power up for a Familiar, right?
Perfect familiar for the Hexblade. If your Patron is a construct, why shouldn't your familiar be one?

A Chwinga from Tomb of Annihilation would be an incredibly over powered familiar!

Imps are just too good not to take.

Pixies have quite a few spells, including polymorph. Getting a 4th level spell at level 3 is too powerful for a familiar.
Wouldn't be that difficult of a fix. Simply say innate spell casting features are removed.

How would it be perfect for hexblade? A CONSTRUCT. For a SHADOW warlock. It would make more sense for celestial

Well my Bard has a Tressym familiar, so I'd say that.
Smart, understands common, can fly, and it's a cat. What's not to like?
Crawling Claw, Gazer or one of the elemental Mephits would by my additionss to the list.
