Still very green with D&D, but as far as I know staves technically have more pew pew. Logistically too, I see staves as being more cumbersome and something to keep your hands full. Traveling you can use it to lean on but your hands aren’t free either.
With a wand you can at least store it away for later use. I’m curious if you can swap one out for the other within a campaign. I suppose it’s no different from using bare hands versus a weapon during the next step.

As per rules, you can use a staff in one hand as well.
