My gnome wizard has a backstory that while being mentored, he did something that he thought was the right thing to do, but his decision had consequences towards the masses of the town and/or surrounding towns. In doing so, even though at the time it seemed it was good thing to do, his mentor released him from being his student and the town folk have banished him from his home town.
I just can't come up with a solid dilemma that caused this to occur. I was thinking along the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Umm. Poisoned water supply, cast a spell to kill who he thought did it and forgot he needed them to fix it, so lots of people died. Something like that.
Wizard studied in an Arcane School, had a premonition of some terrible evil being unleashed (good for Diviner wizards), and sought secret rituals to help stop the threat.
However, the diviner accidentally mistakes a conjuration ritual meant for a noble celestial for a demonic devil, and unleashes the monster upon the countryside.
The wizard is exiled from the school, and seeks to make amends by hunting the demon and others like it.
Or to invert Tim's suggestion, have the town's favorite adopted pet (not so much yours) turn out to mind-controlled by someone who is out to wipe out the town. While in a barn with this much liked creature, it turns on you or an animal companion of yours. To defend yourself or your actual animal companion, you kill the town's favorite. Nobody else witnessed it though, so nobody believes you.
Student has a close friend of the opposite sex. Student wants to try and take it further. Object of affection is instead after another who the student recognizes as unworthy. Although using magic to effect folks under these circumstances is widely understood to be an act of selfishness as a minimum and possibly bodily violation at the worst, the student believes they should use their magic to 'expose' the unworthy rival and then to use magic to swoop in and gain the favor of his object. The story is found out and the student is despised for crossing that moral boundary and the mentor loses face over not controlling you and teaching you the moral boundaries of your craft.
Or the student had nasty gas in the middle of a church service.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Ty that is a thought
Rescuing an "abandoned" baby animal and bringing it home only to have it's big, angry, and mean mommy come looking for it is a good one.
Professional computer geek
Could have created a chemical that killed that year's harvest or coastal fish. Wanna push off peasants kill their cash crop
Ty I appreciate the suggestion.
This I really like. I will have to modify it a bit, but the basis of the suggestion works well. Ty

Here is a timeless classic ...

You could Indiana Jones it and have them sleep with the mentors son/daughter.
Abide.
Thank you for all of the suggestions. I have it all worked out now.
