Is a changeling illusionist too generic? I've only recently discovered the changeling and so far it seems like the perfect class for them would be illusionist. Racial Stat bonus wise, they aren't the best choice, but the Change Appearance seems like it is made for the illusionist. (or rouge, depending how you think about it) I mean, it removes the need for one of the most important spells for a early illusionist in my opinion, disguise self, leaving you free to use that slot in your "spells known" for something else. Please share your opinion.
Disguise Self allows you to change your appearance even down to your clothes. Changeling's don't change their clothes and depending on how radical their change is - they will need to change clothes before the change. That said - Changeling's can change into anything as long as it's still a Medium humanoid of roughly the same 'shape'. Meaning they can shrink / grow more than 1 ft which Disguise Self can't. So swings and roundabouts.
That's true but changing clothes is usually more about the logistics of it. Sometimes you might not be in a position to spend a few minutes pulling out a change of clothes - getting undressed and redressed and then packing the old ones away - whereas Disguise Self is basically 6 seconds.
You could certainly get away without Disguise Self but I just feel that it's too flexible to sacrifice - even with the Changeling's ability.
Edit: There's a magical set of armour that can appear as clothes or other armour with an Action isn't there? If you managed to find that you could disregard Disguise Self as you could Changeling your appearance and then use the armour to change clothes - and since it's magical it changes size and shape with you. Edit 2: Yes - found it. Glamoured Studded Leather
I will probably still take the disguise self spell, as my DM doesn't really like to hand magic items out, especially to me, as I do have a tendency for causing chaos. With that, I would be able to impersonate anyone I wish, with the changeling"s ability, and the ability to change your clothes as a bonus action. That armor is kind of OP for a changeling illusionist.
Ah, but a Changeling Illusionist, with the aid of their advanced illusion feature, would allow them to Minor Illusion a set of clothes that could change in accordance with their whim (no spell slot needed, either!)
I'd also hazard to say an Enchantment Wizard is good as well, considering the Charisma bonuses they receive.

A Changeling Illusionist will probably want both.

I didn't realize that. Thanks for telling me. However, clothes are pretty cheap, which makes it easy to change appearance without suspicion.

There's always the Hat, not that I can see light armor being a game changer given the ability for Wizards to get armor multiple ways in 5e

True.
