I was looking for some advice on a new character I am building for dungeon of the mad mage. My party's characters all died (or left the dungeon) and so our new characters will start off at level 6. I have (upon advice of another player) picked yuan-ti pureblood for my race, which I think should offer some great roleplay opportunities. I'd like him to be a bit of a mad scientist constantly dissecting fallen enemies and never wasting a chance to gain new knowledge. My thought is that he was raised to be an infiltrator, but ultimately he became more obsessed with learning than relaying information to his superiors. I figured wizard would be the best class suited to this personality, but I was hoping to start him off as something else to reduce squishyness. I don't care about minmaxing, but do want him to be viable. So I was thinking of a dip into either 1 level of knowledge cleric or 2 levels of hexblade warlock. Hexblade would push back my big spells which sucks but I could get the evocation that allows me to cast disguise self to mask the fact I am a yuan-ti, which I feel is thematically appropriate (also the invocation that make me proficient in persuasion and deception seems relevant). I haven't decided on his school of magic, but was leaning towards having him focus on either necromancy or evocation spells. If I start with cleric I was thinking Str8, Dex10, Con14, Int17, Wis14, Cha10 for my stats, and if I choose 2 level of warlock I was leaning towards 8, 12, 14, 17, 11, 12.
So what I am asking of you, my more experienced peers, is does this seem like a viable character? From both the roleplaying and mechanical aspect of the game. Also what school of magic would you suggest? Any suggestions, comments and questions are welcomed.
I would be a divination wizard, but from your two options I'd say be necromancy wizard, having undead in the dungeon will help with traps. If you were to multiclass I would be an artificer (if you have Eberron: Rising from the Last War) and I'd be alchemist with necromancy wizard. Roleplaying wise, this is a very nice character concept. Mechanically, a wizard/hexblade subclass normally isn't great, though if you were a bladesinger wizard if your DM allows it, and you get a bonus to both CHA and INT, which would be good.

If you're starting at level 6, just got all 6 in wizard. Level five is a big power spike for level the spells (which is when both of those wizard specializations start to shine) and level 6 gives a wizard subclass feature.
Alter self is a good spell if you want to change how you look that wouldn't require you to multiclass.
Honestly I don't see much reason from a mechanics standpoint to take either of those classes. If you have a good RP reason to do it, go for it. Otherwise I'd recommend to just stick with wizard.
