Toll of the Dead. 1d12 necrotic damage, on a Wisdom Saving Throw, and if you are an evocation wizard, at level 6, if they fail, they take 2d12 necrotic damage, or half on a success.

If I could only have one I’d be leaning towards Create Bonfire or Fire Bolt because they are the two that affect objects as well as creatures. That flexibility is nice when you need it.
Eldritch blast, no invocations is a close second. As a warlock, with all the buffing invocations, it is way better than all the others.
Yeah I mean, we're in the Wizard subforum is all.
Still relatively easy to take, with added spell lists from Ravnica backgrounds, feats like Magic Initiate and Spell Sniper, and other ways. But, yeah, should probably be limited to wizard spells. Toll of the Dead is my personal favorite, as I said above, but Fire Bolt is my second favorite for Wizards.

I have a hard time narrowing it down to one... but here's my top three... and no surprise they all have there place
fire bolt - I know firebolt has its shortcomings due to being fire, and toll the dead does more damage per cast but it's still very satisfying to land a crit and roll all of those d10s which toll the dead can't do
toll the dead - best cantrip for reliable damage, especially if you're playing a evocation wizard, hands down.
chill touch - chill touch might not do the most damage for a "damage" cantrip, but it's allowed my group to trivialize multiple encounters by not allowing a creature to regain it's hit points
Toll the Dead is my number one and Chill Touch is my number two. The two work really well in tandem and I love the flavor of necrotic damage, rotting away and decaying the opponent's body. Toll the Dead's effects are relatively situational, but the range is fantastic for a squishy Wizard who wants to stay out of the fray.
"I twist my hand and mutter an incantation, casting Chill Touch. *Roll* That's a hit. With a horrible sound, a spectral hand grabs his stomach. The flesh around the hand seems to melt and decay before you, dropping little gobs of skin onto the floor."
"I point and speak the words, 'For whom does the bell toll?' That's a WIS save. *Roll* The enemy's eyes go blank, as he seems to age twenty years in a single second, hairs turning gray and wrinkles appearing on his skin. 'It tolls for thee', he says, before shaking his head and snapping back to reality, looking wearier than before."
All of the damaging cantrips are fun in their own ways, though. I love good old Eldritch blaest and Firebolt as well.

You should say, "For whom doth the bell toll", just a small change, but I think it makes it seem distinguished and creepier.
I agree, Toll of the Dead, and Chill Touch are both great.

Mind Sliver from the UA is really impressing me so far but yeah, gotta hand it to Toll the Dead. Can't go wrong with a d12 damage.
I’d say chill touch due to the fact the creature you’re targeting can’t heal next turn.

My personal go-to is Chill Touch unless its an undead heavy campaign, if it is then I usually go Ray of Frost.

plus its one of the very few cantrips with 120' range.

I just wish they named it something that made sense, even if it was basic as "necrotic ray" or "necrotic bolt". at least it would make sense. haha
Magic initiate I guess
Even with magic initial its still technically a warlock spell. It'll use CHA not INT.
Thank god someone else said it and I didn't have to.

When I play an Evocation wizard I love Toll the Dead but as any other wizard type im not a fan of save cantrips as a general rule.
I have to ask - is this by chance a Critical Role reference? xD
What can I say? Fjord is a good boi.
