Oh okay, my dm does it that way and he hates homebrew rules so I just assumed since he wouldn’t let me get into a counter spell war. Still though, power word stun that invulnerable dude so they’re inflicted with stunned condition which incapacitates them so they can’t hold concentration and they’re done for. Cast one 9th level attack spell while they’re stunned it’ll probably knock them below 100 since they have so little hp and then you can just power word kill them.

There's ways to get around that, too. If they're a chronurgist, they can use Temporal Shunt to stop the Power Word Stun.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Warlocks can't cast Counterspell as a 9th level spell, only a 5th. And if they try to do that, they lose, because they've only got four spell slots to devote to counterspelling.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
So now you’ve got a stunned wizard In Front of you trying to make a con saving throw while you bombard them with whatever spell your heart desires. Or just chop them up with your hexblade.

nope. Max one counterspell per turn, cause you only get one reaction. Whoever cast the initial spell wins

You cant cast a ninth level attack spell and a power word kill unless you have the boon of high magic.

They can get power word kill as a part of their mystic arcanum or whatever. I was thinking banishment while they’re stunned then prepare imprisonment while they’re floating in a demiplane and they’d get back right as the spell is prepared and then *boop* Mythril orb for eternity. And if that doesn’t work just gnaw at their hit points.
That’s enough of that for today. Thanks for my first dnd argument, I actually had a reason to look at Warlock because of it which was fun and I might actually play it now.

The point is that Warlocks don't get enough spell slots for that to be a viable strategy. If they try to counterspell, they burn through their slots too quickly and the wizard wins by attrition.

Honestly this is a pretty strong win for the wizard as the wizard would definitely have preparations at that level like a necklace containing a simalcrum in a magic jar...
Warlock attacks, smites the wizard below 150 HP, Hurl through Hell.
Wizard (while in hell) casts Invulnerability.
Warlock readies Power Word Stun, which the Wizard cannot counterspell since he is still in hell. Once the spell is successfully readied, it can't be counterspelled because it has already been cast.
End of Warlock's turn, the wizard reappears, is immediately stunned by the readied Power Word Stun with no chance to respond. Invulnerability would still protect against the 10d10 psychic damage though, which would resolve before the Stun could be applied.
(I resurrect this thread just to say wizard wins) Answer:
1) You assume the Wizard can be easily bursted below 150 but sure I’ll go with it.
2) Why cast invulnerability their are many better and effective spells one of which is True Polymorph (most effective). You could also just time stop while in hell for a min of two turns then cast some spells (like mind blank etc).
3) He would be a Pit Fiend or otherwise and just be immune to hurl through hell and would have too much health to be affected by your spell (and you just wasted one of your biggest spells).
4) See 3) above
The wizards spell list and ability to adapt to anything the warlock can throw at him as his spell list is enormous. There is no way a well built wizard (like in this battle) in any means can ever be built by even a min maxed warlock the two are just incomparable.

Yeah but that’d be no match for the 9th level counterspell that warlock would. hit you with.
Warlocks can't do a 9th level counterspell.

sorry, I meant fifth, but still same level as temporal shunt so no check required.
So now you’ve got a stunned wizard In Front of you trying to make a con saving throw while you bombard them with whatever spell your heart desires. Or just chop them up with your hexblade.
You're assuming that the wizard doesn't upcast Temporal Shunt so you can't auto-counter it. A 20th level wizard has the slots to do that.

A creature they can see, so the warlock can just cast darkness on themself with devils sight then temporal shunt and counter spell wouldn’t work.
The wizard could counterspell the darkness.

Go ahead, it doesn’t cost warlock a slot to cast so you’d just be wasting it.
