I like Magic Initiate and Ritual Caster to give access to spells that wizards normally don’t have access to. Any class will work, it depends on the flavor that you like.
If you have a quarterstaff and combine Warcaster with Polearm Master it's pretty sweet. Cast a spell as an opportunity attack, but they trigger an opportunity attack when they get within Quarterstaff reach. Pretty soon people will just leave you alone on the battlefield.

It doesn't matter how smart you think are you. No one will want to work with you if you're an *******.

Sadly, this is not actually supposed to work. It is ultimately up to the DM but Crawford has ruled as much that the opportunity attack gained from Polearm Master is supposed to use the polearm and doesn't combine with Warcaster in this way.

If you have 20 INTat level 1, via feats and awesome rolls, what do you spend your ASI on? Name your strongest plays for the ASI / feats etc.

War Caster is the best. After that, consider resilient for Dex or Con. Good saves save your life.

The enemy can't stab you if they get paralyzed immediately after walking next to you. Profit.

Spell Sniper is amazing, and it doesn't hurt to improve your your Dex or Con (favor con if it is below 16, otherwise favor dex).
