In regards to spell component gold value: is the gold value based on the cost of the raw materials or the value of the completed object? I can see it going both ways but I'm interested in other opinions
I'm looking at Leomunde's Secret Chest (PHB P. 254) the spell component is: an exquisite chest, 3' x 2' x 2', constructed from the rear materials worth at least 5000 GP, and a tiny replica made from the same materials Worth at least 50 GP.
I know it's always better to have more than you need when creating most anything. But what is your players can only get so much or if a thief stole part of one of the materials (silver or gem dust) could the players still create create what they needed if the end product could be sold/bought for the appropriate value?
It's the value of the completed Object, not necessarily the cost of the combined materials. For Example, the materials used to make lead based ink for the Illusory Script Spell might not come to a total sum of 10 gp, but the manufacturing of all the materials together might. Or as another example, the Platinum Rings for the spell Warding Bond most likely do not weigh a half pound each. It's the design and skill put into making the rings that gave them the value.
