So I went to create a character sheet to keep up with a character I am using on an at home adventure...and I noticed that there is no Drow selection on the Race Screen. Not sure if this is the right area for this or not, but seeing as the Drow race is a selection based on the Players Handbook I would have thought that it would have been a natural selection...not sure if this is the right area to post this or not but I figured I'd try.
I purchased the PHB for exactly this purpose. I'm the dungeon master. Now how does the player in my campaign get access to it? I also have a "master" tier subscription.
I've sent an invite link to a campaign. When my players click that link and opt to create a new character, they do not have the PHB restricted content available to them (specifically the drow race, in this case.)
When my player creates and joins with a different character, I can't change the race of that specific character to be a drow.
If I make a drow myself, I can't let another player control them.
The licensed content mechanics on this website are so incredibly confusing and makes this whole system very difficult and frustrating to use.
You have to turn on content sharing in your campaign. Also, any player that has content that you do not would also need to turn on content sharing to share their content
Thank you! I wish that link were easier to see or if there was anything in the app explaining that it needed to be done, but I really appreciate you letting me know @boogeyman.
The problem in this case is that I'd already created the campaign before we purchased any content. This was our first time using D&D:B and I had no idea how any of this works. We had to learn after the fact why Drow weren't available, where to get them, and then figure out how to enable player sharing. None of that is easy to find through the interface and took quite a bit of googling or asking questions to figure it out.
Here's how it went down:
We want to play D&D! Let's try this new D&D beyond thing instead of just using Roll20's character sheets again.
I make a campaign, players start making characters
No one can make a Drow! Why not? Are Drow just not added to the system yet? The race selector character creator says it has PHB content, so we're confused. Google google google to figure out we need to purchase PHB.
DM gets PHB! We think we should be set now but it's not working. Google google google....oh we need a subscription to share content.
DM gets hero subscription! We think if DM signs up for subscription then content should share, but again, it's just not working. Google google google...file help ticket...post on this forum - oh it's because there's now an obscure link in the upper left-hand corner that we have to click to enable shared content.
It'd really be much more helpful if:
The creation screens let you see the existence of content you don't have access to and indicated how you could get it - show "Drow" as a disabled race and link me to the PHB in the marketplace, or let me do the whole purchase right there in the character creation screen.
Content sharing was automatically on and the DM could opt to turn it off - why would the DM ever NOT want players to access shared content?
Buying new content prompted you whether you'd like to share it in current campaigns, since it's quite likely that is why you purchased it, or start a new campaign.
The race / class / etc. selectors didn't let you filter for "players handbook" when you don't really have the full handbook's content - it should say "player's handbook (limited)" or "restricted" or something to indicate you don't actually have the full PHB content.
Players and the DM could transfer ownership of a character within the context of a campaign. As a DM playing with brand new players I was trying to set up characters for my players so they didn't have to learn the rules. I know this is probably difficult due to licensing - prompt me that I need to enable content sharing (and give me an easy way to do so) to transfer ownership.

Sorry, I read this part and assumed it meant you created the campaign, then sent the links. Also assumed content was purchased previously. Sorry about that!

Have you purchased the PHB through DDB?

I don't have the digital copies but have both in person.
You need a purchase from the Marketplace to unlock non-free content on DDB.
WotC doesn't like giving away digital content. D&D Beyond isn't run by WotC, but they had to sign a licensing agreement.

Seems a bit of a candid move. I mean why would I pay twice for the same thing?
There's many threads discussing this across these forums, but to sum it up for you:
Users across these forums have presented plenty of analogies and explanations. There's a good one just here if you'd like to read further. :)

It is on the campaign creation screen. Right at the top, it seems pretty clear on campaign creation. Not checked? Nothing shares.
It's clearer there, for sure.

All good suggestions and things that, we ourselves, have listed to improve once we get to building more campaign management features.
Thanks for the great descriptions of what your observed pain points were, that kind of feedback really helps.
