In D&D Beyond checking the box to wield something is telling the system "consider this", and unchecking the box is "ignore this".

Unfortunately it is. Cyb3r is 100% correct, “wield” on DDB doesn’t mean what “wield” means colloquially, nor quite what it means in the PHB.*
It used to work the way you (and I) think it should, but then they changed it. When I asked about it like you did I learned that there was a bug and they changed things to fix it.* What would happen was, if a player removed a magic item that required attunement without “unattuning” it first then it would disappear but the PC was still technically “attuned” to it. Then the player wouldn’t be able to use that attunement slot again unless they remembered which item it was, added it again, re-equipped it again, unattuned it and then removed the Item again. But by the time most folks discovered they had an issue and learns what was going on they had absolutely no recollection of what that old item was. I suppose I never noticed because my OCD was probably making me do it “in the right order” the whole time and so it never came up for me. 🤷♂️
I asked, why they didn’t just set the sheet grey/lock out the “Remove” button while the item was attuned instead. That would have solved the bug problem and still kept things more in line with RAW like DDB always insists is a high priority for them. They never answered me….**
*(Relevant equipment could theoretically have another checkbox for “equip/unequip” or something that acts as a consider/ignore UI/UX function. Then terms like “wield,” “wear,” “don/doff,” etc. could be used explicitly the way they are used in the PHB. But that’s probably a whole shedload of coding and would likely only confuse folks more. The juice wouldn’t be worth the squeeze.) **(I may be incorrect, but I kindasorta got the impression from the tone of the silence that nobody had thought of that solution before I asked. 🤷♂️ We will likely never know.)
Wonder why unwielding a weapon removes the attunement too. Is this supposed to happen in D&D? Because it feels weird :)
