my question is in regard to whether or not the updated rulebook will be instituted with the books that are already owned and whether or not it will change the characters we have already created
Either Jeremy Crawford or Chris Perkins indicated during (I think) the Creator's Summit that existing books on DDB would not disappear. My best guess--and it is only a guess, I have no insider knowledge--is that they will treat the existing core 3 books like they did Volo's and the original Mordenkainen's. I.e. content within them will be labeled as "legacy," but still available to those who purchased them. Purchase of the "2014" core 3 here on DDB will likely not be possible after the release of the new books.
