What would be cool is as you level up your character you keep a snapshot copy of character. So, when you go from L1 to L2 you could easily go back to L1 for purposes of starting a new session. Hope this makes sense.

This is on the roadmap of features already- unfortunately no ETA quite yet.
This will be really useful for people like myself who like to pre-build our characters. I already have my current character mapped out on paper up to level 7 and I'm currently level 2. That way once we level up we just choose the level 3 version of the character and be done.
I'm going to bump this because I was about to open a new topic for this and found the old one instead.
It's not just about being able to go back to previous levels, it's also incredibly important in case something erroneously gets lost.
The other day one of my players accidentally overwrote their Max HP and nobody could remember for sure what it was. We had to reconstruct it from previous screenshots we fortunately had... We really need a backup or versioning feature.
I can't imagine a system keeping a history of every change made at level up, or every change in general. How many save states will the system need with all the level progression people use this site for? Unless there's a button for Create Save File or something, I cannot image a system like this having an automatic backup generated on any change or level up. Of course saving as a PDF is a round about way to manually save most all the info on your character sheet.

That's exactly how I imagine it. Just have a "take a snapshot" or "tag version" or "copy character sheet" button.
Oh, neat. Thanks! It's not as tidy as a dedicated option for creating snapshots of one character, but it is a workable solution
I'm genuinely curious as to what the functional difference would be between what you're imagining and the exiting copy button?
So, from a function perspective, they are virtually the same, as either way, you are saving the state of your character and can go back to it. But for the intent behind it, it would keep your character lists cleaner, all versions of a character being contained in one character entry. It's the same idea of managing virtual servers. If you have a VM created, you can clone it, and then they both exist in your VM list. It doesn't work as well for rolling back to a previous state as easily tho. That's where snapshots come into play. You can open the single character, and then have your snapshot history that you can select the state of the character to view or utilize. Having save states would be beneficial for a UX and a UI perspective.

Creating a copy also limits what a free account can and can't do so having a "snapshot" would be a better solution. Since every change you make is immediate (no button to click), the lack of versioning for character sheets can make it a bad experience for new users trying things. I started rambling about technical things, but all of this has been solved before, so the issue is either manpower or getting buy-in.

Apologies if this is already done...I'm new.

Bump, I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to making sure my files are safe, has there been any progress towards this goal?
I save a PDF of my character at every level up.

There already is a copy button that does just that. So if you want to make a 'snapshot' before leveling up, you can use that existing option
