Many spells and class/subclass features make temporary changes to your stats, commonly referred to as buffs. Features like Rage or Auras, or spells like Mage Armor or Haste. Things that affect your character sheet for a minute up to multiple hours. These are not things you should add to your character sheet all the time but something you would want to turn on at the flip of a switch. Dndbeyond currently does not have a Buff feature yet that can apply temporary changes to your character sheet, though I hear this is on the drawing board.
Nothing is stopping you from making the necessary changes to your character sheet each and every time you need to display any of these Buffs, but sometimes remembering each of the different settings, each and every time, can be a little daunting. Take Haste for example, you have to double your speed, add an extra Attack action, give yourself advantage on DEX saving throws, and add +2 to AC. That’s 4 changes to your character sheet that only last for a minute. That’s 10 rounds of combat where you have to try and remember each of those changes, each and every time. Or change it manually and hope you remember to change each setting back when the effect wears off.
We can use your character’s Inventory system to make this so much easier. Magic items are the only form of homebrew that gives us a type of on/off switch (equipped or unequipped) for instantly turning an effect on or off. There’s a few magic items that add these effects currently in the published homebrew library, I actually made a few dozen but these have been rejected lately saying magic items used to simply buff a character are not allowed. So now to fill the ample amount of free time I have, I’m going to make this thread a How To make your own homebrew buff system.
Before proceeding I would encourage you to become familiar with homebrew here, here, and here. Some of those tutorials and FAQs may be out of date, but it does give a good oversight to the system as a whole. Be aware that you will not be filling in every single field in this homebrew. I have tried to make sure anything useful is filled in correctly.
I am hoping for feedback from the dndbeyond homebrew community to improve these templates for anything that can be improved upon. I do thank the team at dndbeyond for giving me a hobby the last few weeks, figuring out how to make some of these work. Bladesong, Rage, Haste, and Slow were all very challenging to implement correctly.

[EDIT] There is no way to differentiate between STR and DEX based melee weapon attacks using this method. DEX based barbarians using finesse weapons. Leave off the Damage modifier

Description:
This item is to replicate the effects of the [spell]Feign Death[/spell] spell. Simply equip it when the spell is cast and unequip it when it ends. Spell details:
You touch a willing creature and put it into a cataleptic state that is indistinguishable from death.
For the spell’s duration, or until you use an action to touch the target and dismiss the spell, the target appears dead to all outward inspection and to spells used to determine the target’s status. The target is [condition]blinded[/condition] and [condition]incapacitated[/condition], and its speed drops to 0. The target has resistance to all damage except psychic damage. If the target is [condition]diseased[/condition] or [condition]poisoned[/condition] when you cast the spell, or becomes diseased or poisoned while under the spell’s effect, the disease and poison have no effect until the spell ends.
DURATION 1 HOUR
Many spells and class/subclass features make temporary changes to your stats, commonly referred to as buffs. Features like Rage or Auras, or spells like Mage Armor or Haste. Things that affect your character sheet for a minute up to multiple hours. These are not things you should add to your character sheet all the time but something you would want to turn on at the flip of a switch. Dndbeyond currently does not have a Buff feature yet that can apply temporary changes to your character sheet, though I hear this is on the drawing board.
Nothing is stopping you from making the necessary changes to your character sheet each and every time you need to display any of these Buffs, but sometimes remembering each of the different settings, each and every time, can be a little daunting. Take Haste for example, you have to double your speed, add an extra Attack action, give yourself advantage on DEX saving throws, and add +2 to AC. That’s 4 changes to your character sheet that only last for a minute. That’s 10 rounds of combat where you have to try and remember each of those changes, each and every time. Or change it manually and hope you remember to change each setting back when the effect wears off.
We can use your character’s Inventory system to make this so much easier. Magic items are the only form of homebrew that gives us a type of on/off switch (equipped or unequipped) for instantly turning an effect on or off. There’s a few magic items that add these effects currently in the published homebrew library, I actually made a few dozen but these have been rejected lately saying magic items used to simply buff a character are not allowed. So now to fill the ample amount of free time I have, I’m going to make this thread a How To make your own homebrew buff system.
Before proceeding I would encourage you to become familiar with homebrew here, here, and here. Some of those tutorials and FAQs may be out of date, but it does give a good oversight to the system as a whole. Be aware that you will not be filling in every single field in this homebrew. I have tried to make sure anything useful is filled in correctly.
I am hoping for feedback from the dndbeyond homebrew community to improve these templates for anything that can be improved upon. I do thank the team at dndbeyond for giving me a hobby the last few weeks, figuring out how to make some of these work. Bladesong, Rage, Haste, and Slow were all very challenging to implement correctly.
