As I wrote months ago, DnDB needs to have someone fix how they use their cookies framework or replace it. There is simply the wrong stuff in it. There is no way this is needed. It is just sloppy design (like no design, just tried until worked).
this has nothing to do with the images really, it is just misusing the header to store marketing information (usage analysis stuff) in wrong ways.
Maybe fixing this could be accelerated by telling the marketing people that collecting data this way is also quite unreliable. The main method for getting them their data should be incentavicing login (have that) and then just use the account ID to store everything they like to know server side (processing it has to be done somewhere anyways, no reason to not also make the one request server side to load the data by account ID).
As some experience the problem quickly expanding over different browsers for them it is likely stored server-side already anyways and just completely unnecessarily making roundtrips to the client all the time updating the same data instead of just telling the server who is back and what is happening right now -- and update server side only.
Marketing (or even legal) might also not like that you can see so much of what marketing does care about if to much is in client side cookies. Fix please. As has been pointed out, there are guides about how to do that data collection business properly out there -- as small businesses like Google and Facebook make their living from it.
This is still an issue and has not been addressed by staff in any way that actually solves the problem in a meaningful way. Can we get an update on this by staff? (I mean, probably not, but I'm willing to keep poking...)
It didn't show results immediately, but since a few days after clearing cache I haven't noticed the issue anymore.
How do you clear the cache? This is getting Beyond Absurd.

It depends on your browser and OS. What are you using? Also, don’t forget to clear your cookies too, that’s usually the bigger issue.
I blocked the ratings cookie, but the rest of them are still ~8,500 bytes total. What cookies can I safely remove without messing things up?
(after blocking the ratings cookie, I did a hard reload + cache clear, and logged out and back in. neither fixed it, though I do have some images back now)
EDIT: this is actually the first time I've seen my avatar appear for a while. YAY
This is now an ongoing problem for me almost weekly.
Have you tried this? I had this issue daily and can reproduce it on demand but once I did what suggested in that comment, I have not run into the issue on multiple computers. I wish there was a way to do this on the android version of Chrome because when browsing dndbeyond on my phone, pictures never load. Any. Ever.

kiwi browser is an android chromium browser that allows chrome extensions. It's what I use for dndbeyond on my phone and works well.

It appears to have done the trick... for now. I'll post again IF it happens again. 🤞
Another solution that no one has mentioned is closing all browser windows (except incognito windows as they don't store/track to the same place) and then reopening the browser and navigating back to dndbeyond.com.
Also, deleting cookies for all time will help as well. Cookies are just a form of tracking that allows websites to make assumptions about where you've been or how to traverse the site. Sometimes they even contain a cookie for your login token to save you time and not have to log back in. It literally doesn't do anything harmful to your PC or any of the sites you visit to clear the cookies. The worst you'll have to do is re-log into any site that uses a cookie to "remember" your login.
The reason I say the first bit is because the browser itself, not the webpage, also caches things that you do while the window is open. So sometimes you must also close all browser windows before trying to open the browser again to navigate back here.
To be clear - Say you're a Google Chrome User. You click the Chrome icon to open a browser window. Let's say that you use the shortcut control + n to open another browser window (so you can see a YouTube tutorial and D&D Beyond at the same time without switching tabs). Both of those windows share the same application cache. So by closing JUST the browser window containing D&D beyond web pages, you're not actually clearing the application cache as the other window, containing YouTube videos, is still open. You must close BOTH windows. However, if the YouTube videos were being viewed in an incognito window (control + shift + n), then you DO NOT need to close that window in order to clear the application's cache.
The same is true for Edge, with its "Private browsing" window and FireFox, which also sports an Incognito mode.
To re-iterate for anyone who is not tech savvy:
Clear ALL browser cookies
Don't worry, they'll re-populate when you visit each site
The worst you'll have to do is log into any site where you've checked the "remember me" box
Close ALL non-incognito/non-private browser windows
Open a new browser window (not an incognito/private, just a regular window)

Yup... tried those things too. The only thing that ended up working was blocking that particular cookie. The Ratings Cookie. I haven't had the problem since.
While on dndbeyond click the EditThisCookie icon (looks like a cookie)
Scroll down until you find a line that reads: .dndbeyond.com | Ratings
Expand that line and click the "block" button as circled below. The first two boxes should be checked - leave the value box unchecked. Then click add this rule.
Do a hard reload and possibly empty cache: In chrome hit F12 then right click the reload button and choose hard reload You may have to choose empty cache and hard reload if the rest fails.
Some people have also mentioned they've had to log out and back in after following these steps.
With this a few of us have been able to fix this issue and stop it from reoccuring.
Does it sometimes take a while after doing so? Added the Edit This Cookie, think I followed the steps correctly. Still having some issues with not seeing character portraits or some people's forum avatars. But did get a bit of things back I think.
EDIT: Looks like I derped out and forget to click on "add rule" when blocking the ratings cookie. So it didn't actually take. Now I'm seeing images (and avatars) all nice again as far as I can tell. WHOOP!
Yip, the problem is back for me, too. Oddly, though, only on my desktop, not on either of my laptops using the exact same Chrome account, log-in, etc. I get the Frame for the character portrait and the theme. No backdrop and many of my backdrop and frame options appear to be broken (ie nothing but the broken jpg icon showing). Oddly, my currently selected backdrop (FToD 8) on my main PC shows just fine in the selections but does not appear on the sheet itself. Cookies and cache cleared, etc. Chrome is up to date on all devices.
Ultimately, this is a minor issue, but it is the sort of simple thing that matters and the root cause fixed for good. It isn't like Chrome is some backroom web browser that 3 people use or that calling up an image on a webpage is 9th level wizardry.
If it helps, when I go into Developer Mode and select my character portrait, I show a file in the Characters folder" that pulls up "Content unavailable. Resource was not cached". I can find the background_texture.png where my chosen background should be. Also, if I try to load a new character portrait, I go through the entire "Choose File" process only to be told "No file chosen".
I've been having to clear my cache and history every week now due to this issue of 'blank images'. Using chrome and on a lenovo laptop. Totally a minor issue but as someone who wants darkmode on my sheets, it doesn't help that the majority is stark white.

New version of EditThisCookie out since late last year. I had no clue, spent all afternoon trying to figure out why my stuff broke recently. Apparently the author let the old version get delisted and the extension store disabled the old version.
Installed the new extension. Set the rule to block the Ratings portion of the cookie. Problem solved again.

Thanks! It worked like a charm... Had to relog in.

EditThisCookie fixed it for me... but it is no longer supported by Chrome aaaaaand the issue has returned! Pretty frustrating!
