I added a Panther as a Wild Shape (2024) option in the extra's tab of my druid, the panther's stealth bonus is +7, my own stealth bonus is +2 (no proficiency, just same as dex mod), yet somehow, if I open the statblock for the panther wild shape in my character sheet, it says it has stealth +5
from the way Wild Shape is formulated I would think that I'm supposed to just have the +7:
" Game Statistics. Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the Beast's stat block, but you retain your creature type; Hit Points; Hit Point Dice; Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores; class features; languages; and feats. You also retain your skill and saving throw proficiencies and use your Proficiency Bonus for them, in addition to gaining the proficiencies of the creature. If a skill or saving thow modifier in the Beast's stat block is higher than yours, use the one in the stat block. "
Am I missing some reason why it's not just the +7 innate to the panther, or is this some issue in DnD beyond?
The Panther has Expertise in in Stealth : it adds double the proficiency bonus, which for a panther is +2, so the skills bonus is: +3 Dex, +2 Prof +2 Expertise, for +7.
When being added as a Wildshape extra on the sheet it only adds your proficiency bonus once. This is why it's only +5 instead of +7. The rules say you should be gaining the form's proficiencies, this includes expertise. I don't know if this will affect all statblocks that have skill expertise, or just panther.
This is a bug in D&D Beyond.

Thanks for the clarification, it's really a shame that DnD beyond isn't all that good at displaying their own game elements. The more I use it, the more I don't want to use it anymore
I hadn't seen this post but experienced the same issue recently. Moreover, there doesn't appear to be a homebrew solution to this. HB allows one to specify a base skill bonus or an additional bonus to account for expertise. Regardless of what one enters in either field, the skill bonus is capped as beast ability modifier + beast PB. Other VTTs (e.g., FGU) don't have this problem. This should be a simple fix. At the very least, the HB should work.
