This may not be possible due to the arrangement with WotC, but I just had an idea and idk if it's been brought up or considered yet.
A lot of people are upset about "buying twice" when all they really want is the character builder. I have gone on at length about my opinions of that, so I won't repeat them here, but rest assured that I am fully on Team DDB and I support what you folks are doing.
This may also require a lot more work to implement, so that may be another hurdle, but I thought it might be a way to silence some of the criticism (as you can never please everyone).
What if there was a Character Sheet Lite? With how I'm envisioning this, you can create a full character with all options completely for free, however you only get the tooltips and detailed descriptions of content that has been paid for. Like, you can add any magic item from the DMG completely for free, but you still have to use your book to see what it does. Maybe it could still include reference to page numbers as an extra olive branch.
Again, I'm not sure if this is something you see as worthwhile, or even possible in accordance with your agreement with WotC, but I thought it was worth bringing up at least.
Just homebrew an item/subclass with the right names and put the book and page number in the description. Less than 5 minutes, character builder lite achieved.
The fact that we can homebrew anything in the books In its entirety makes all complaints about having to buy twice moot. You can even share your homebrews in campaigns without any subscriptions.
If it wouldn't violate any agreement with WotC, I'd love to see something like this. We'd literally only see the name of the thing and hopefully a page reference.
You can homebrew anything except full classes. You don't have to put in modifiers or anything to use them, just type what you want in the description boxes with a link, page number or whatever, and you're done. Even with full descriptions and modifiers it's not difficult when you get used to it. Some things can take a few minutes, the simpler items can even take only seconds. Homebrewing is very easy here. So, this is why I get so confused about "buying twice" - you don't have to, just homebrew it, a few mins and you're done. Easy peasy.

For me it's not a buy twice thing. I just think it would be useful if, while I could look through the books, the dropdowns or selection lists on DDB would basically be curated lists of things I may not have noticed flipping through the books.
It's not something I think is important or necessary, just cool to have if possible.

I like how easy this is to do already.

No arguments here lol

As DxJxC mentions you can already do this.
